Wolfgang Schröder (historian)

Wolfgang Schröder (born July 9, 1935 in Dresden , † November 18, 2010 in Taucha ) was a German historian .

After graduating from high school in 1953, Schröder studied history at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig until 1957 . In 1957 he passed the state examination for high school teachers and worked until 1958 as a teacher at a high school .

In 1958 Schröder became a research assistant in the department "1871-1917" at the Institute for History of the German Academy of Sciences , Leipzig branch. He did his doctorate in July 1963 under Ernst Engelberg and Lothar Mosler on the German trade union movement in the 1890s. In 1972 he received his PhD B on the labor movement in the last third of the 19th century.

From 1969 to 1990 Schröder was the responsible editor of the yearbook for history . From 1973 he was also a member of the editorial board. In 1976 he switched to the Central Institute for History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in East Berlin as a research assistant . In September 1986 he received the title of professor there.

From 1992 to 1996 Schröder worked as a research assistant at the Commission for the History of Parliamentarism and Political Parties in Bonn .

Schröder's main area of ​​work was the history of the later 19th century with a focus on the German labor movement. He dealt in detail with the life and work of Wilhelm Liebknecht . Schröder could no longer complete his planned biography of Liebknecht. His widow Renate Dreßler-Schröder and the historian Klaus Kinner released the fragmentary biography from the estate in 2013.
