The Erdmannsdorf – Augustusburg cable car is a funicular railway that connects Erdmannsdorf in the Zschopautal and Augustusburg around 15 km south-east of Chemnitz in the Central Saxony district. Not far from the mountain station is the Augustusburg hunting lodge of Elector August of Saxony . As is usual with funiculars, two carriages run at the same time and meet at an alternate point ( Abtsche Weiche ) in the middle of the route.

The funicular is 1239.8 meters long and has to overcome a height difference of 168 meters on this route. The gradient averages 13.5 percent; the maximum gradient 20.14 percent. It travels a constant 3 m / s (approx. 11 km / h) on a track width of 1000 mm. The journey takes 8 minutes. The two vehicles were built in 1996 and, with a net weight of 9 tons, have 36 seats and 39 standing places.

history

In 1897 it was decided to connect the two places with a funicular. Difficulties in planning, finances and execution delayed the completion of the railway until 1911. The opening ceremony took place on June 24th in the presence of the Chemnitz district chief Max Lossow . Due to bad planning, modifications to the track structure had to be made in the first few years. Due to the economic decline after the First World War , the railway had to be shut down for three months in 1923. At the end of the 1920s, the car and winder were replaced.

It survived the Second World War and was in the 1952 DDR for state-owned enterprise converted. From 1971 to 1973 the funicular was completely reconstructed. After the reunification, it went to the district's own transport company. Smaller renovations were carried out in the early 1990s.

Since operations for the Freiberg district were in deficit, the DB Erzgebirgsbahn became the operator of the Augustusburg cable car in 2005 on behalf of the Zweckverband Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen . A reconstruction was carried out in 2006.

On June 24, 2006, the cable car was reopened with the cable car run under the motto “Man versus machine”. The runners competed against them on a 1.5 km long uphill stretch parallel to the cable car. Since then, the runs have taken place annually in June.

Since January 1st, 2016 the operator of the cable car Augustusburg is the Verkehrsverbund Mittelachsen GmbH .
