The Chemnitzer traffic corporation (CVAG) is a municipal transport company based in Chemnitz . With its own fleet of buses and trams, it operates most of Chemnitz's local public transport . The company is a member of the Central Saxony Transport Association ; it was founded on June 26, 1990 as the legal successor to VEB Nahverkehr Karl-Marx-Stadt .

Line network

On March 30, 2008, CVAG's local transport network was fundamentally changed under the slogan “The New Network”. The planning of this far-reaching network change took place over a period of more than five years. The bus route network that has grown over many years has been fundamentally restructured. On numerous bus routes, the branches in the city center have been recombined and the routes changed. In order to limit the parallel traffic to tram and regional bus routes, some bus routes were shortened. Some city districts will be better developed with new stops. The bus station only serves as a parking / turning point in the CVAG local transport network. Almost all bus lines have been given a new numbering based on the frequency (on weekdays in daytime traffic). For example, crosses the line 3 1 in 1 0-minute, 2 2 in 2 0-minute intervals, etc. The rhythm of the lines has been adjusted according to their usage so that it is now a common clocking scheme with exclusive 10, 20, 30- and 60-minute intervals.

Little was changed in the tram network. The tram lines 1, 2, 4 and 5 now run every 10 minutes from Monday to Friday during the day. Line 6 was discontinued in December 2017, the Chemnitz Bahn line C11 takes over all trips every half hour. Due to concession regulations, line 6 will continue to be shown at stops / vehicles. Lines 1 and 2, which previously both went to the main station, were linked at the central stop to form the new line 2, which no longer goes to the main station.

The night network was extended to all days of the week with eight lines. The night lines sometimes use different routes than the day lines.

Many of the bus stops that were previously connected directly to the central public transport hub (especially those of suburban areas) can only be reached by changing between trains and buses since the network changeover, and the quality of the inner-city transport links for some stops in terms of travel time and frequency of transfers deteriorated with the redesign. On the other hand, the connection of some parts of the city such as Rabenstein improved significantly. The conversion also created around 60 new stop locations.

The goals of the network conversion were to reduce operating costs and increase the number of passengers on the tram lines by attempting to do away with parallel lines between trains and buses. The z. B. Line 54 (Sachsen-Allee - Neefepark), which ran parallel to Line 1 in the Central Stop - Industrial Museum section, was dropped completely and the Neefepark could only be reached by changing trains in Schönau. Due to the high level of criticism, line 23 (formerly Heinersdorf - Annenstraße) was extended to Neefepark, but it runs at a slower pace to the former line 54. On other omitted direct connections, z. B. Line 33 to Adelsberg, there is still no direct connection (except for the night line N13). In the first year of the new network (2008) the total number of passengers dropped by one million to 39 million.

Trains of lines 4 and 6 / C11 at the turning stop in Chemnitz Hbf, February 2015

At the same time as the line changeover, CVAG also introduced a new corporate design , which includes new employee uniforms , the new logo and a new website.

Due to construction work at the main train station, the routing of lines 2 and 4 was changed in May 2011 and line 1 was set up again. The routes of lines 1 and 4 were connected to each other at the stop “Straße der Nations” (today: “Brückenstraße”). There the railways changed the line number. For this purpose the line 2 drove to the main station. Since the turning loop was interrupted due to the construction work, only bidirectional vehicles could be used for the main station. However, their number is limited, which means that such a mission on the much longer line 4 was not possible. The turning loop has been usable again since June 16, 2014, now with a tour of the platform hall and an additional stop at the bus station. This means that lines 4, 6 and C11 (formerly 522) go to the main station again. The trains on line 4 drive through the enlarged turning loop in a clockwise direction, those of lines 6 and C11 (formerly 522) in the opposite direction. Lines 1 and 2 were linked again at the “Brückenstraße” stop, but the line numbers were retained.

Night bus routes

Eight bus routes provide night connections to the central stop every day at 11.45 p.m., 0.45 a.m., 1.45 a.m., 2.45 a.m., 3.45 a.m. and 4.45 a.m. (the latter only arrival, connection to daytime traffic). The Chemnitzbahn line C11 (formerly 522) of the City-Bahn Chemnitz also takes part in selected meetings.

All night bus routes start and end in a star shape at the central stop. Since there is no turning loop there, single-line circulations are not possible, instead the buses at the central stop change their line.

Central stop

Central stop, platforms 3 and 4
Starry sky at the central stop after the modernization (2014)

The central stop is the central transfer point for bus, train and intercity lines in the center of Chemnitz at the Bahnhofstrasse / Rathausstrasse intersection. A total of nine city bus, five tram and four intercity bus routes drive to the central stop. The C11 (formerly 522) train of the Chemnitz Bahn also runs from the main train station via the central stop to Stollberg (Chemnitz model).

The central stop consists of nine regularly used platforms, three replacement platforms and one that is only used on Museum Night. They are numbered from 1 to 13. Of these, five are only for trams (3, 4, 7, 10 and 11), seven only for buses (1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 12 and 13) and one for buses and trams (9). Only platform 5 is divided into 5A and 5B. Platforms 10 to 12 are used in the event of disruptions or construction sites, and platform 13 only on museum night. Platform 2 is served by buses for long-distance traffic, the night bus line N15 and buses of line 23 that end at the central stop.

The stop is on two streets running in different directions. Five platforms (1 to 5) are located on Bahnhofstrasse. The other four together form “Rathausstrasse”, on which no more individual traffic takes place. While you have to cross the busy Bahnhofstrasse to change from and to platform 1, all other platforms (with the exception of the replacement stops 11 to 13) can be reached without crossing a street. Simultaneously with the renewal of the advertisements, the platform designation was changed. Until then, the designation was in letters from A to H and R. Today's platform 11 was previously called R, which stood for Reitbahnstraße. Most of the platforms were also divided, e.g. B. C1 and C2. This subdivision was canceled on most of the platforms, as the second section was very rarely used.

From January to May 2014, the old and failure-prone platform lighting ("starry sky") was replaced. Since spare parts were no longer produced, it was completely modernized and 1,600 new LEDs were installed.

Mobility center

The CVAG mobility center is located in "Chemnitz Plaza", directly at the central bus stop. In addition to ticket sales for Chemnitz and the entire Central Saxony transport association and information about timetables and tariffs, advice on subscriptions is also possible. You can also get advice on car sharing in Chemnitz. In the shop window there is an LC monitor on which the current departures for the entire central stop and disruptions are displayed.

Passenger information

The conversion and modernization to a new computer-aided operations control system (RBL, also known as Intermodal Transport Control System (ITCS)), which has been taking place since 2008, was completed at the end of 2011. The changeover to digital communication between the control center and the vehicles as well as their location transmission via GSMR also took place.

Dynamic display

Central stop, old display (front) and new dynamic display (rear)

With dynamic displays, passengers at the stops are to be informed about current departures of the next buses and trains, as well as in the event of disruptions. Live information is provided for CVAG buses and trains, Chemnitz Bahn trains (C11 Chemnitz Hbf - Stollberg, C13 Chemnitz central station - Hbf - Burgstädt, C14 Chemnitz central station - Hbf - Mittweida, C15 Chemnitz central station - Hbf - Niederwiesa - Frankenberg - Hainichen) and partly buses of the RVE (e.g. line 254). Buses from other companies are also listed, e.g. 704 and 262, but not in real time.

Departures "... Min" are displayed, at the earliest 60 minutes before departure. If there is a time at this point, no real-time information is available for the vehicle.

A special feature of the information is the countdown until departure. The current departure time is displayed by "immediately" (flashing), the minute before by "immediately" (not "1 min") and only from then on the departure is displayed in minutes. Therefore, in the case of a punctual departure, the next journeys on the same line are indicated in “9 minutes”, “19 minutes” etc. (10-minute intervals).

Locations

Locations of advertisements in Chemnitz

Since 2011, dynamic advertisements from Lumino have been set up in the urban area. Starting with 4 displays as a test at the Hauptbahnhof stop (today Hbf, Bahnhofstrasse), stops near the city center were also equipped in the following years. In the summer of 2012, the old for new was exchanged at the central bus stop. The platforms, which were previously equipped with up to 3 displays, usually only received one, but with a larger display font. Exceptions are platform 5, which was equipped with a display in sections A and B, and platform 9. In addition, platforms 10 and 11 received displays for the first time - but small due to the rare use of the replacement platforms. All departures at the central stop are displayed on an LC screen in the shop window of the mobility center.

As of 2011, the stops Straße der Nations / Freie Presse (today Brückenstraße), Theaterplatz and Omnibusbahnhof (only the new construction of the common bus and train stop) received an advertisement in each direction. The Roter Turm stop received 3 ads and Stefan-Heym-Platz 4 ads. Only in the main train station (Chemnitz model) were 2 LC displays from BMG MIS used on platforms 1 to 4. There is also a display on the stairs to platforms 1 to 4 and one next to the main display of the DB, which is identical to this.

In 2014, 108 stops were equipped with around 150 displays. The total costs amounted to 6.8 million euros, 70% of which were funded by the ERDF . Most of the displays are only 3 lines and are mainly set up in the direction of the city. There are no displays on lines 41, 51 (from ZH) in the direction of Altchemnitz and sometimes on line 2. On line 41, many buses run by other bus companies without the possibility of real-time information. The Chemnitz model level 2 was implemented between Annenstraße and TU . During the renovation and new construction from 2016, the stops were equipped with displays.

All displays on the platforms, including those in Chemnitz Hbf, have acoustic information, e.g. B. for the visually impaired, which is triggered by a button.

Real-time information

With the modernization of the computer-aided operations control system, real-time information was set up on the website. With this it is possible to get the current departures of every stop served by CVAG. The journeys are displayed a maximum of one hour in advance. With the exception of special texts and ticker that can appear on the dynamic displays, all information is also provided in real-time information.

Interactive route network map

A new interactive route network plan was introduced on January 30, 2014. The course of the line is shown in a schematic and topographical representation. For each stop, information about the serving lines and disruptions can be called up. In addition, there is real-time information and the selection of the stop as the start or destination for the timetable information. Only in the topographical view can additional objects, e.g. B. museums, government agencies and schools. A map of the surrounding area is available for selected stops.

Mobile website

The mobile website has the timetable and real-time information, information on tariffs and traffic obstructions and in 2014 received a mobile version of the interactive network plan, which has a location function.

Passenger TV

Passenger information system in the Variobahn

Since the end of 2014, all Variobahns have had a new passenger information system. The stop displays on the ceiling were replaced by screens and the web spiders removed. In contrast to other cities, only the course of the route, real-time information on transfer options and information about possible construction sites and disruptions are displayed.

Social media

In order to improve and expand customer information, CVAG has been represented on Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube since summer 2015. At the moment it is only possible to communicate with the service team on Facebook.

Public transport acceleration

In order to accelerate the Chemnitz local transport and make it more attractive, CVAG and the city administration have been planning to convert sections of buses and trains since 2010. Measures should be: Additional driving and bus lanes, the adaptation and extension of green phases and the preference for buses and trains at traffic lights.

The first section of the route was Zwickauer Straße between Falkeplatz and Kappler Drehe which was rebuilt for 500,000 euros in 2010/2011. Since August 2011, buses and trains have been given the right of way over private vehicles on this section when approaching an intersection. In addition, a bus and bicycle lane was created out of town. After problems in the area of the Barbarossastraße junction, the traffic lights were changed to counteract the partly new traffic jams. Next, traffic lights on tram line 4 (Stollberger Straße) were upgraded step by step. New technology was installed at the intersections of Bahnhof- / Annaberger Straße, Annaberger- / Annenstraße and Annen- / Reitbahnstraße in 2013, the traffic lights at the central bus stop followed in 2014. To improve punctuality on line 21, traffic lights were installed at the Leipziger by summer 2015 Road renewed.

Dodger

In 2011 Chemnitz was the city with the highest proportion of fare dodgers in Germany. Over 6% of passengers drove without a valid ticket, which led to a loss of revenue of 1.35 million euros. As a result, more inspectors were deployed on behalf of CVAG, which reduced the proportion of fare dodgers to 2 to 3%.

Front entry

In order to further reduce the proportion of fare dodgers and to minimize the economic loss, CVAG decided in 2013 that from August 1st, bus passengers can only board the driver to show them their tickets or to buy one. There are special regulations for prams and wheelchair users who can still use the second door to get in. Even with a high number of passengers at a bus stop, the bus driver is able to open all doors to board. The rear doors are otherwise only used for exit.

The front entry reduced the number of fare dodgers to currently 1.7% and ticket sales from bus drivers rose by a third. Over a year, additional income of around 400,000 euros can be expected, which corresponds to the price of a new bus.

criticism

Shortly after the plans were published, a very strong criticism was sparked against the front entry, which partially ignored the cause (fare dodging). The debate about why a front entry was necessary was completely omitted and was not taken up by the press either. There were fears about delays that could occur due to the longer front entry, especially in school and student traffic. Older people in particular feared not being able to get a seat in time before the bus left and of having to walk a long way through the bus to get off the bus. Some people also felt that they were being treated like criminals, as they believe that everyone will be placed under general suspicion of fare dodging if they have to get in the front.

reality

Especially at the beginning there were sometimes long delays, but these can also be traced back to other causes. Due to a flood in the summer of 2013, there was a very high number of construction sites at the time of the introduction of front entry. B. 21, were often stuck in traffic. The fear that there would be major problems in school and student traffic did not come true either. However, there are occasional delays. In articulated buses in particular, passengers often stop in the front part and block the way to the empty rear part of the bus.

On the buses, ticket inspectors continue to check tickets, as some show the driver that the tickets have already been validated, but the driver cannot see it in the short time, and others jostle for the rear doors when getting off the bus so as not to pass the driver have to.

Depots

The Variobahn prototype (Tw 601) at the “Südring” stop.

tram

There are two tram depots in Chemnitz. In addition to the CVAG headquarters, the tram depot in Chemnitz-Adelsberg houses the main tram workshop, a storage hall, the power supply for the tram, an underfloor wheel set profiling machine and a washing system. In addition, the Krenkelstraße parking facility is located in Altchemnitz, which was built from 2009 to 2011 on the area of the former depot.

bus

Buses are parked and serviced at the Werner-Seelenbinder-Straße bus depot. There is a traffic control center and operations management for rail and bus traffic, storage halls, a free parking area, an inspection hall, a workshop and social wing, an operations building, a washing facility, a natural gas filling station and an indoor and outdoor tank system.

Tram Museum

In the Kappel Tram Museum there are tram vehicles and buses from the entire history of Chemnitz local transport, especially a collection of narrow-gauge vehicles. Special trams also run from here for special occasions or after registration. The main workshop was located here until the Adelsberg depot was built.
