history

A wooden chapel was probably built in the village around 1150, which was then replaced by a stone one after 1200. Altmörbitz itself was first mentioned in 1280 as dominus de merenbiz . In 1350 Burgrave Otto von Leisnig established a permanent pastor's office. In 1457 Altmörbitz came into his possession through an exchange deal by the electoral councilor Hildebrand von Einsiedel , while the village of Rußdorf near Limbach-Oberfrohna has since become part of the St. Georgenstift zu Altenburg and since the 16th century as an exclave to the later duchy of Saxony-Altenburg . The first craftsmen and cottagers are known in the village from around 1500. A gathering of peasants looted the village in 1525 as part of the peasant war . A schoolmaster was named for the first time in 1533. In 1550 a pulpit was built in the church, nine years later in 1559 the galleries were built. A burial book was started in 1565, and a baptismal register and grape book in 1570. The plague raged in the village in 1584 and probably killed 50 people. After the school had no teacher for years, Jacob Walther was appointed the new teacher in 1609, but the residents were soon dissatisfied with him.

In 1632 Altmörbitz was burned down by the Croats as a result of the Thirty Years' War ; only four houses as well as the church and parish were spared. Six residents were shot while trying to escape. A year later another wave of plague claimed 84 lives in the village. Presumably in 1692 a choir was added to the church. Here Gabriel Wimmer (1671–1745; still 1690 in Sagan in Silesia) was a Protestant pastor, who among other things had four volumes of detailed song explanation (Altenburg 1749) printed [published posthumously] in which songs by Paul Gerhardt are explained - one of the early works of their kind of hymn commentary in general. In 1817 the church was renovated and in 1820 the parish was rebuilt. In 1830 the construction of the Peniger Strasse began in its current course.

Altmörbitz was in the care of Altenburg in 1457 , then until 1856 in the Electoral Saxon or Royal Saxon Office of Borna . From 1856 the place belonged to the Frohburg court office and from 1875 to the Borna district administration .

The Altmörbitz parish was dissolved in 1917 and merged with the Gnandstein parish . Because the bells were removed during the First World War , they were consecrated again in 1925. The two-class school was also dissolved in 1953. The students were relocated to Frohburg . From 1963 the fifth grade went to school in Kohren-Sahlis, the elementary school in Gnandstein. In 1954 a harvest kindergarten was opened. The sheep farm was rebuilt in 1958. Because of a flood in the village in 1970, a dam was built that same year as a water reserve for the lignite works. In 1974 the LPG Altmörbitz, Dolsenhain and Gnandstein merged to form the KAP of the LPG "Albrecht Thaer". In 1977 a kindergarten was set up in Altmörbitz. In the same year, the permanent damming of the Schömbach reservoir began.

With the fall of 1989, there was also criticism of the municipal council. In May 1990 a new local council was elected in the course of the turnaround; With the exception of a single member of the PDS , the new municipal councils were independent candidates who were close to the CDU.

In the summer of 2013, the former federal road 95 , which runs through the middle of Altmörbitz, was rededicated to state road 51 . Since then, long-distance traffic has been using the federal motorway 72 , so that Altmörbitz has been significantly relieved of through traffic.

On April 1, 1996, the independent village of Altmörbitz was incorporated into the Kohren-Sahlis community and formed its own district. Since January 1st, 2018 the place belongs to the city of Frohburg.

Population development

  • 1570: approx. 200 inhabitants
  • around 1800: approx. 300 inhabitants
  • 1834: 319 inhabitants
  • 1950: 441 inhabitants

After 1890 a significant decline in population began because people were drawn to the lignite mining areas of Bocka and later to Borna . The place had the largest population increase in a very short time shortly after the Second World War .

Culture and sights

church

The single-nave church, consecrated to St. Martin and St. Catherine , was built in the middle of the 14th century. Inside there are late Gothic stencil paintings on the flat wooden ceiling and the galleries . The elaborately designed, with a bay window wreath provided roof skylights originally ended in a point. In 1782 he received a baroque tower helmet after the roof turret caught fire due to a lightning strike and a 6.5 meter long section of the spire had to be sawn off to contain the fire.
