The S 51 begins northwest of Penig at the crossing of the B 175 . Behind Penig the area is rural. Passages through towns are rare. Langenleuba-Oberhain is crossed on a bypass road. The road also runs through the state of Thuringia for a few kilometers . Here it is dedicated as state road 3095. Several districts of Frohburg now follow : Pflug , Altmörbitz and Dolsenhain . After passing through Altmörbitz there is a junction through the Leina forest to the Schömbach dam and Leipzig-Altenburg Airport . Gnandstein Castle can be seen east of Dolsenhain .

The S 51 crosses the Kohrener Land and crosses the B 7 at the Eschefelder Kreuz. This former intersection of two federal highways is a hotspot for accidents. Now you reach the Leipzig lowland bay, which is heavily influenced by lignite mining . The road leads through the towns of Frohburg , the Borna districts of Neukirchen - directly past a disused briquette factory - and Zedtlitz. On the southern outskirts of Borna , the district town of the Leipzig district , the S 51 ends at the Borna-Süd motorway junction to the federal motorway 72 .
