history

The place was first mentioned in 1209 as Franckenhagen . The place name indicates a Frankish settlement. The plant took place as a street perimeter village . By the middle of the 14th century at the latest, there were two villages, Upper and Lower Franconia, which were owned by different manors. Regarding the administration, both places belonged to the electoral and royal Saxon offices of Rochlitz and Borna . It was not until 1856 that all parts of the two towns were assigned to the Geithain court office and in 1875 to the Borna district administration .

The St. Mauritius Church responsible for both places is located in Oberfrankenhain. The church, which is Romanesque in some parts (construction started around 1110–1160), was rebuilt in the late Gothic style in 1514. The convertible altar also dates from this time. In 1635 and 1644 the church and the villages were devastated by Swedish troops. In 1726 a new rectory was built in Oberfrankenhain. In 1984 the church was extensively renovated.

On July 1, 1950, the two villages formed the community of Frankenhain. During the second district reform of the GDR in 1952, the community of Frankenhain was assigned to the newly founded Geithain district in the Leipzig district , which became part of the Leipziger Land district in 1994 and the Leipzig district in 2008. On January 1, 1994, the Frankenhain community was incorporated into the Eulatal community, which in turn was dissolved on January 1, 2009 and incorporated into the town of Frohburg .
