Commerau , Upper Sorbian , is a place in the east of the Bautzen district in Saxony and has been part of the Großdubrau community since 1994 . The place lies in the Upper Lusatia and belongs to the settlement area of the Sorbs .
geography
Commerau is located in the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape about 14 kilometers north of Bautzen in the floodplain of the Kleine Spree and at the transition between the agriculturally used Upper Lusatian area in the south and the extensive forest and pond areas of northern Upper Lusatia. About two kilometers to the north is one of the largest pond groups in the area with a total of 18 Commerau ponds .
In terms of settlement history, the village is a round hamlet, which was later expanded in all directions and is bordered in the south by the Little Spree. The neighboring towns are - separated from Commerau by forests - Lieske and Neudorf / Spree in the northeast, Halbendorf in the east, Göbeln in the southeast, Särchen in the south, and Kauppa and Jetscheba in the west.
history
At the northern exit of the village, incendiary graves from the Bronze Age were discovered in 1922 and 1926 , which indicate an early settlement.
The current place was first mentioned in 1399 as Komeraw . Other forms of name recorded were Comeraw (1419), Kummeraw (1445) and Comerow (1479). The current form of the name was first mentioned in 1768. The name is derived from the Old Sorbian word komor for "mosquito" (cf. Polish komar ) and refers to the location of the settlement in a damp, swampy environment.
Commerau did not have its own manor until the 19th century, but had a Vorwerk of the Klix estate at the southern exit of the village. Since 1873 there was also a school in town, which was also attended by the children from Kauppa, Jetscheba, Klix, Spreewiese and Göbeln. The school did not close until 1999.
Up to January 1, 1994 Commerau was an independent rural community, since 1936 with the districts Göbeln and Kauppa with Jetscheba. Then it was incorporated into Großdubrau.
Population and language
The population gradually increased from under 150 in 1834 to over 200 in 1925 in the 19th and 20th centuries.
For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 200 in the 1880s; including 168 Sorbs (84%). In 1956 Ernst Tschernik still counted 57% Sorbs in the Commerau community. Since then, the use of Sorbian in the village has continued to decline.
In the 1950s, the municipality of Commerau and its districts had almost 700 inhabitants at times due to the settlement of displaced people from the eastern regions. By 1990, however, the population had fallen back below 500.
The predominantly Protestant population has been parish to Klix since at least 1614.
Infrastructure
The federal highway 156 , which connects Bautzen with Weißwasser , runs through Commerau .
