geography

Sdier is located on the western slope of the Spreetal or on the eastern slope of the Großdubrauer Höhenrücken, about 11 kilometers northeast of Bautzen . To the southwest, the terrain rises up to 200 meters in the direction of Großdubrau, while the floodplain of the Spree is a good 20 meters lower than the village. There used to be a windmill on the elevation in the southwest.

In terms of settlement history, Sdier is a loose square village , with the core of the settlement being to the west of today's B 156. The neighboring towns are Särchen in the northeast, Klix in the east, Zschillichau in the south and Brehmen in the west.

history

Sdier as exclave of the Bautzen cathedral chapter (map from 1746)

Well before 1400 there was a fortification in Sdier on today's parcel Das Schloss , which was surrounded by moats.

The current place was first mentioned around 1400 as the seat of a Mathey von Dzyr . Other forms of name recorded included a. Sder (1413), Sdere (1447) and Zdir (1502). The place name probably refers to a fire clearance (Old Sorbian žděr ). In the year 1413 the Sdier manor is recorded for the first time, which held the manorial rule in the place until 1595. Then, together with the towns of Sdier and Brehmen, it became the property of the Bautzen Cathedral Chapter , which explains the existence of a Catholic diaspora in Sdier to this day.

In 1479 there was a conflict with the manors down the Spree, Kauppa and Milkel, over the use of the Spree water, which was generously used by the lords on Sdier to irrigate their soils. As a result, the mills could no longer be operated properly downstream.

In the years 1718/19 the castle was rebuilt as the summer residence of the cathedral chapter at the behest of the Apostolic Prefect Martin Bernhard Just von Friedenfels , and a prayer room was also set up, which from now on was used twice a month for the Sorbian Catholic mass. Sdier finally became a parish in 1923 and remained so until 2005.

Until January 1, 1994, Sdier was an independent rural community, since 1936 with the district of Zschillichau. Then it was incorporated into Großdubrau.

Population and language

The population was stable at around 200 in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

For his statistics on the Sorbian population in Upper Lusatia, Arnošt Muka determined a population of 244 in the 1880s; including 241 Sorbs (99%). In 1956 Ernst Tschernik still counted 64% Sorbs in the Commerau community. Since then, the use of Sorbian in the village has continued to decline.

The population of Sdier is traditionally religiously mixed. On the Catholic side, Sdier was from 1923 to 2005 the parish of the parish "Immaculate Conception" (Sorb. Swjata Marija bjezhrěšneho podjeća ), which extended to Sdier, Brehmen and the Catholics of the predominantly Protestant eastern district of Bautzen. The current church was built in 1965-68 and has been a branch church of the parish Maria Rosenkranzkönigin in Radibor since 2005 . The Protestant Sdians have been parish to Klix since the 16th century .

Economy and Infrastructure

The federal highway 156 , which connects Bautzen with Weißwasser , runs through Sdier . After the opening of the Löbau – Radibor railway line in 1906, Sdier had its own train station at the southern exit of the village, which was named after the neighboring parish of Klix. However, passenger traffic was discontinued in 1972; the line finally shut down in 1998 and dismantled in 2004.

Klix airfield is located between Sdier and Särchen .

South of Sdier and west of Klix are the premises of the agricultural cooperative Heidefarm Sdier eG and Edelfleisch GmbH, as well as the Klixer Recycling und Service GmbH premises not far from there .

Waterworks

The Sdier waterworks was built in 1965 north of the actual place and is used to use the rich groundwater supplies. From a depth of 30 meters, the drinking water for the old districts of Bautzen and Löbau and some other communities is obtained here with the help of 14 wells. The total output is 55,000 m³ of drinking water per day.
