The first mention of the village as Dorffkempnitz dates from 1447. The place name Dorfchemnitz is traced back to the tributary to the Chemnitz, which in the Middle Ages did not have the name Zwönitz, but has been handed down as Kamenica . The village consisted of a field of 13 ¼ hooves. The relatively high number of 67 residents compared to 35 possessed men in the 16th century is probably due to the active mining in the area of the Lehmbach. Well-known colliery are z. B. 1564 the Grube Hülffe Gottes , 1570 St. Andreas and 1580 St. Ludwig . In 1815, the New Hope Morgengang mine was built on arsenic, silver and other ores. There was an iron hammer at the northern end of Dorfchemnitz . A grinding mill was located here until 1897, when it was converted into a wood grinding shop after a fire. However, after the hydropower proved to be too weak, a cutting mill was installed there instead.

In 1628 Esaias and 1632 Samuel von Pufendorf were born as children of the local Evangelical Lutheran pastor in the Dorfchemnitz rectory.

In addition to agriculture, the most important occupations in the 19th century were above all the linen and hosiery trade. The women in town were busy making lace. The first stocking factory was founded in the village in 1885, and this trade expanded rapidly, so that by 1900 several stocking factories were in operation. Many residents also found work in the stocking factories in neighboring Thalheim. In the GDR the local stocking factory belonged to the VEB Esda (previously VEB Feinstrumpfwerke 3 Tannen). Seamless women's stockings were produced on 48 circular knitting machines. The industry came to a complete standstill after reunification .

Dorfchemnitz has been part of the city of Zwönitz since January 1st, 1998.
