The corridor of the village, which was laid out in the late Middle Ages, was probably ceded to the Grünhain monastery by the Burgrave of Starkenberg as the owner of the Stollberg rule between 1240 and 1250, together with Zwönitz , Günsdorf and Gablenz . The village was first mentioned in 1497 as Kynheide . The name is interpreted as a place on a pine-covered heather . It initially belonged to the Grünhain monastery and became the official village of Grünhain after its secularization in the 16th century . In addition to agriculture, there were also some other acquisitions in Kühnhaide, probably due to the proximity to the small town of Zwönitz. At the beginning of the 17th century there was an oil mill at the upper end of the village, a community-owned lower mill and Matz Günther's mill with an associated board mill. This so-called medium mill, now known mostly Walther mill, a timber-frame building erected in 1693, the square on the upper floor 19 Fields with geschweiftarmigen Andrews crosses contains. Mining for silver began in 1731 at the Neujahres-Glück colliery . From the first half of the 19th century it is said that the inhabitants lived mainly from cattle breeding, flax growing, peat cutting, lace making and weaving. Further branches of business that developed in the course of industrialization were sewing and linking at home for the stocking factories in Zwönitz and Niederzwönitz , where numerous residents of Kühnhaide found work. In 1928 the Zwönitz substation was built in the Kühnhaide district due to the technical necessities of the power supply companies in West Saxony. Wood processing expanded in the 20th century (Möbel-Walther, Kisten-Walther). A volunteer fire brigade was established in 1876.

Kühnhaide was originally parish to Zwönitz, today it belongs partly to the Trinitatiskirchgemeinde Zwönitz and to the Johanniskirchgemeinde Niederzwönitz. A secondary school of the Zwönitz secondary school was established around 1700 and is documented for the first time in 1735. A schoolhouse built in 1846 was built in 1846 and expanded in 1885. After a new building, this was used as a municipal office from 1929. The incorporation to Zwönitz took place on October 1, 1961. A local council was first formed in 1999. Around 770 people live in the Kühnhaide district.
