from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Esaias (von) Pufendorf (born July 26, 1628 in Dorfchemnitz , † September 5, 1689 in Regensburg ) was a diplomat in the Swedish and Danish services.

Life

Pufendorf was born in Dorfchemnitz (near Stollberg / Erzg.) As the child of the Lutheran pastor Esaias Elias Pufendörfer and his wife Margarete, daughter of the Dippoldiswald cloth cutter Thomas Hickmann. He was a brother of the philosopher Samuel Pufendorf .

He attended the Princely School of Grimma from 1639 to 1645 , then studied classical studies and philosophy in Leipzig and Jena (1648 Magister).

In 1657 or 1658 (not exactly determinable) Pufendorf entered the service of the Swedish crown. In the course of his diplomatic career he worked at the embassies in Denmark, Holland, England, East Prussia and France. In 1663 he married first Anna Defiant and after her death in the same year Veronika Siems (en), with whom he had five children. In 1671 Pufendorf was envoy in the Lower Saxony district, in Vienna (1671–1674) and in Saxony (1675–1679). From 1680 to 1687 he was Chancellor of the Duchies of Bremen and Verden . After conflicts with the Swedish government, he announced his resignation in writing and fled from his place of work in Stade to Hamburg without being formally dismissed .

After his departure, Pufendorf entered Danish service in 1688 and was sent to the Reichstag in Regensburg as an envoy for Denmark, where he died on September 5, 1689 and was buried in the ambassadorial cemetery at the Trinity Church. In the inscription on the large tombstone, his many years of service for Sweden and his unauthorized resignation from the Swedish service are mentioned and justified: “... the King of Sweden, whose business he ran at many European courts with the greatest loyalty and equal righteousness for over 30 years and as last serious cause forced to quit the old position ... "

Even after his death, Pufendorf was sentenced to death in October 1689 by the Svea Hovrätt (Court Court) in Stockholm for treason and for having left his post in the Duchy of Bremen and Verden.

From the marriage with Veronica Siems (en) came u. a. the children:

  • NN ∞ Baltzar Klinckow, ennobled as Klinckowström (born March 20, 1690), Hanoverian Lieutenant General
  • Eleonore (* 1674; † October 15, 1723) ∞ Jürgen (Georg) Heinrich von Sydow (* June 1, 1661; † July 24, 1725) heir to Blumberg , parents of Gustav Adolph von Sydow
  • Beate Elisabeth ∞ Bernhard Joachim von Sydow († 1742)
  • Katharine Magarethe ∞ Jürgen Johann von Wrangel (born December 26, 1672, † June 6, 1746), commandant of Verden

Honors

During his stay in England (1663) he was knighted by King Charles II of Great Britain and was therefore allowed to use the title Eques auratus (golden knight), which is also mentioned on his tombstone.

In 1673 there was then the ennoblement in England and Sweden.
