history

Carved figure of the monk Jordan in front of the Gornsdorf town hall

According to a largely unknown legend, the village was founded around the year 1200 by the monk Jordan from the Walkenried monastery . The first settlers of the place were Harzer (important for turpentine extraction ) and probably came from the southern Harz. The initial Jordan village became Gornsdorf through sound shifting over time.

The first documentary mention, however, comes from the year 1346. Around 1500 mining began. In 1630 the village was destroyed as a result of the Thirty Years War . Gornsdorf remained a small farming community for several centuries, counting just over 100 inhabitants in the 16th century and around 250 in the 18th century. The first linen weavers came to the village around 1670, and a little later braid weavers. The first hosiery workers are mentioned in the church book in 1745.

There was rapid industrialization, especially in the textile industry. Gornsdorf grew into a hosiery village. In 1912 Gornsdorf was connected to the railway network by the narrow-gauge railway Schönfeld-Wiesa-Meinersdorf (closed again in 1976) .

In the 19th century the population rose rapidly from 550 (1821) to 2262 (1890), then further to 3585 (1931). The village grew up the mountain slopes and the settlements on Andreasberg (with allotment gardens), on Badberg and in the lower part of the village emerged. This community had turned into an industrial community and even supplies circuit boards for the electronics industry as far as Canada and Japan.

Until its dissolution, the community was part of the Auerbach administrative community based in Auerbach (Ore Mountains) .
