Niederwürschnitz is a municipality in the Erzgebirge district in Saxony . It is part of the Lugau administrative community .
geography
The place is located in the former hard coal district Lugau / Oelsnitz between the cities of Chemnitz and Zwickau on the northern edge of the natural area of the Erzgebirge on the Würschnitz river . Noteworthy is the very good infrastructural development through the A 72 motorway , which is directly adjacent to the Niederwürschnitzer Flur with the exit Stollberg-Nord and the federal highway 180 which crosses the center .
history
The origin of the place goes back to the settlement of the area by immigrants from the west of the German Empire in the 12th century. In 1447 the Waldhufendorf founded here was first mentioned in a document. The name Niederwürschnitz is derived from the Slavic word "Virsnica" (Fischreusenbach), the name of the river flowing through this valley.
Finds in the adjacent Steegenwald suggest that a settlement must have existed here as early as the Bronze Age .
The community owes its current structure to the coal mining that started in the 1840s of the 19th century, which together with the textile industry transformed the agricultural area into a densely populated industrial region. Almost 5,000 people settled here in the flourishing economy. Brick manufacture played a not insignificant role in the past.
