The Niederwürschnitz – Stollberg railway line, which is currently in the planning stage, is an infrastructure project of the Central Saxony transport association to implement stage 5 of the Chemnitz model . The project extends in the Saxon Erzgebirgskreis in the area of the municipality Niederwürschnitz and the city of Stollberg / Erzgeb.

With the approximately 3.5 km long new line electrified with 750 V direct current between the existing Stollberg – St. Egidien and Stollberg – Chemnitz Süd should be made possible, the trains of the line C11 of the Chemnitz model Chemnitz main station - Chemnitz central stop - Altchemnitz - Stollberg (Sachs) without changing and without changing direction on to Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. respectively.

Project scope and anchoring in expansion plans

The new Niederwürschnitz – Stollberg line is part of stage 5 of the Chemnitz model , which is essentially an extension of its pilot line from Stollberg (Sachs) station to Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. includes. In particular, it is intended to improve the development of the “Stollberger Tor” industrial area and the residential area at the Bürgerpark in the Stollberg urban area. In addition to the new line (including four new traffic stations), the overall project also includes the electrification of the existing line to Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. including three traction power substations, the construction of a new stop in Mitteloelsnitz and the modernization of the control and safety technology.

The overall project is anchored both in the State Development Plan of Saxony 2013 and in the draft regional plan of the planning association for the Chemnitz Region .

Variant selection

As a result of a comprehensive variant investigation, the investigation variant 3b was determined as the preferred variant to be pursued further in 2015. The decision-making criteria included, among other things, aspects of rail operations, investment costs, the urban development effect , land consumption and the impact on the environment and nature caused by the various variants.

Variants 1–3 each comprised a connection to the new line from the existing Stollberg – St. Egidien near Niederwürschnitz and its southern connection to the Stollberg (Sachs) train station . Variant 1 ran essentially parallel to the federal motorway 72 , variant 2 already flowed out of the existing route west of Niederwürschnitz, crossed the motorway as the southernmost of all variants and would have had a traffic station between Kaufland and the motorway. Variants 3a and 3b essentially ran along Auer Strasse in the “Stollberger Tor” industrial park and only differed in terms of the bypassing of the Bürgerpark.

Variant 4 essentially only comprised the electrification of the existing Stollberg – St. Egidien to Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. Although this would have enabled electric train journeys between Chemnitz and Oelsnitz without having to change trains, it would have required a change of direction at the Stollberg (Sachs) station and hardly any new passenger potential. The examined variant 5 had to rebuild the connecting curve between the two railway lines Stollberg – St. Egidien and Stollberg – Chemnitz Süd to the content. This would have enabled electric train operation between Chemnitz and Oelsnitz, but not with simultaneous operation of the Stollberg (Sachs) station and also without improving the development effect in the Stollberg urban area.

Costs and financing

The overall Chemnitz Model project is funded by federal funds from the Municipal Transport Financing Act (60%) and funds from the Free State of Saxony (usually 15%) and is also financed by the funds of the Central Saxony Transport Association (ZVMS) . In November 2016, the total costs of level 5 of the Chemnitz model, i.e. H. together for the new line and all measures on the existing line to Oelsnitz, stated at 43 million euros.

1.8 million euros are necessary for the planning from stage 5 to the approval planning . The city of Stollberg / Erzgeb. around 10%, d. H. 180,000 euros.

Timing and next steps

Information status 2015/2016

After a variant investigation was carried out in 2015 and a preferred variant was determined, the design and approval planning were carried out in the course of 2016 . According to publications from 2015, the planning approval procedure should begin in October 2016 and the building permit should then be available in 2017. In November 2016, the aim was to carry out the planning approval procedure in 2017 and to complete it by December 2017. Subsequently, the execution planning and the tendering of the construction works should take place, the completion of the construction measure was planned for the end of 2019.

An information event on the planning status and the route was held in Stollberg on November 15, 2016, and more were planned for the fourth quarter of 2017.

Information status 2017

According to information from November 2017, the following timetable is being pursued:

  • Completion of the draft planning in the first quarter of 2018
  • Beginning of the plan approval procedure with public display of the plan documents from mid-2018
  • End of the planning approval procedure in the second half of 2019
  • Implementation planning, tendering and award procedure from 2019
  • Main construction works in 2020 and 2021
  • Traffic opening in December 2021

Information status June 2018

According to a media report from June 2018, the line is not expected to go into operation before 2022. A two-year construction period is required for the construction of the motorway crossing alone.

Information status July 2019

In July 2019, the VMS announced the start of construction for the Chemnitz model stage with 2020, a possible commissioning date was not mentioned. In other publications, the planned construction time was given rather imprecisely as “2021 to 2022/23”.

Information status February 2020

There is no information publicly available on the completion of the draft and approval planning and on the initiation of the plan approval procedure , the intended duration of which was once given as around one year. Its successful completion as well as the implementation planning based on it and the award are prerequisites for the start of construction.

Information status May 2020

According to undated information from May 2020, the draft planning had to be revised "with regard to the future electric vehicle concept". The plan approval procedure is to be initiated in 2020. Depending on its progress, the two-year main construction period should be in 2023 and 2024. The railway line is therefore not Template: future / in 4 yearsexpected to go into operation before the end of 2024 .

Route description

course

The single-track Niederwürschnitz – Stollberg railway line will be converted to the east from the existing Stollberg – Stollberg railway line in the direction of Stollberg after crossing the Niederwürschnitz location. Unbind Egidien and after about 300 meters cross under the federal motorway 72 and continue south in a cut near the Stollberger Bürgerpark. The district boundary between Niederwürschnitz and Stollberg is crossed between the motorway and the Bürgerpark. South of the Bürgerpark, the two-track residential area will be the first new traffic station and at the same time the only possibility for trains to meet on this route. Immediately south of the residential area train station , the route is led through the roundabout , crossing Hohensteiner Strasse and in the middle of Auer Strasse, which is also part of Bundesstrasse 180 here . After about 750 meters, the Kaufland stop is reached, after another 250 meters, the railway line again leaves the middle of the street at a roundabout and continues east of Auer Straße and after about 300 meters turns in a narrow curve in an easterly direction parallel to Turn around Weststrasse ( Bundesstrasse 169 ). The third new stop will be located near the intersection of Auer Straße / Weststraße, the industrial area stop. The route now runs on the slope between the former Continental factory building and Weststraße and will turn north after about 400 meters. The fourth new stop on the Stollberg Grüner Winkel line will be located near the earlier overpass of the farm road from Bahnhofstrasse to the "Hasenbude" and the allotment gardens (formerly the overpass km 15.7) . The new line is still a few meters above the level of the previous line from Zwönitz , will swivel into its route, initially run in the heaped cut, then lowered onto its former embankment, cross Zwickauer Strasse on a new railway overpass and from the south in the station Stollberg (Sachs).

Technical parameters

The narrowest radius of the route is 60 m and is located at about 15.0 km shortly before the Stollberg industrial area stop , further narrow arcs with a radius of 90 m each are in front of and after the Stollberg residential area junction at about 13.5 and 13 km ,8th. The maximum gradient of the route is 57 ‰. In the course of Auer Strasse, the route runs in the middle between the two directional lanes, the track is to be planted with greenery. The maximum speed of the railway vehicles will be 40 km / h on this section of the route. Road traffic is secured in the area of the roundabouts and in the course of Auer Straße with light signals (route kilometers 13.7 to 14.7), the level crossing at the Grüner Winkel (route kilometers 15.7) is equipped with a half-barrier system.

Due to the special technical parameters of this route, which due to the sometimes narrow radii and the maximum incline, cannot be freely used by all railway vehicles, the existing Stollberg – St.Egidien route will be retained for regular rail traffic.

Transport offer and vehicle use

The Central Saxony Transport Association is planning to initially use the existing line C11 of the Chemnitz model Chemnitz Hauptbahnhof - Chemnitz central stop - Altchemnitz - Stollberg (Sachs) without changing and without changing direction every 30 minutes via Stollberg to Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. to extend. At a later date, the extension of line C11 "at the other end" beyond Chemnitz to Limbach-Oberfrohna is planned.

Due to the required approval of the required vehicles both for railway operation according to EBO and for operation in the tram network of the city of Chemnitz according to BOStrab , with today's knowledge only the Variobahn and the Vossloh Citylinks of the City-Bahn Chemnitz are suitable for use on this route.
