The Stollberg (Sachs) train station is in the Ore Mountains town of the same name, Stollberg / Erzgeb. in the Saxon Erzgebirgskreis . Originally the station touched the two railway lines Zwönitz – Chemnitz Süd and Stollberg – St. Egidien . While the Stollberg – Chemnitz section of the Zwönitz – Chemnitz Süd railway line was electrified in 2002 as a pilot line of the Chemnitz model and connected to the Chemnitz tram network, the Zwönitz – Stollberg section has been closed and dismantled. On part of the route, the electrified Niederwürschnitz – Stollberg railway line is expected to be built by 2022 (as of 2018) . This means that there is no need to change trains on the lines to Chemnitz and St. Egidien at Stollberg (Sachs) station.

Geographical location

The Stollberg (Sachs) train station is located west of the old town of Stollberg on “Bahnhofstrasse”.

history

Development until 1990

Railway overpass on Gießereistraße (2018)

The Stollberg (Sachs) station was opened on October 15, 1878 as the starting point for the Stollberg – St. Egidien opened. With the opening of the Zwönitz – Chemnitz Süd railway via Stollberg on July 15, 1889 (Zwönitz – Stollberg section, continuation to Chemnitz in 1895), the station became a railway junction. The construction of this railway line served in particular to connect the pits of the Lugau-Oelsnitzer coalfield to the rail network. In addition to the station building, the Stollberg (Sachs) station received a railway maintenance office, a goods shed, a signal box and a locomotive shed. There were two loading lanes and a people tunnel to reach the central platform.

The 16.25 kilometer long section Zwönitz – Stollberg of the Zwönitz – Chemnitz Süd railway line was shut down on August 20, 1947 due to its low traffic importance and then dismantled as a reparation payment for the Soviet Union. The reconstruction of the Zwönitz – Stollberg section took place in 1949 due to uranium mining in the Western Ore Mountains and the associated increased transport services. After the decline in mining until the mid-1950s, due to high renovation costs and the relocation of rush-hour traffic, rail traffic on the Zwönitz – Stollberg section was discontinued on March 17, 1967. Since 1968 to 1976, the tracks and bridges have been gradually dismantled the tracks of the southern exit of Stollberger Bahnhof north of Zwickauer Strasse.

Modernization of the station in the context of the Chemnitz model from 2002

In the 1990s, planning began for the Chemnitz model , a light rail system based on the Karlsruhe model , for which the connection between Chemnitz and Stollberg was intended as a pilot route.

In 2002 the railway line to Chemnitz u. a. equipped with a high-catenary overhead contact line, equipped with modern control and safety technology and equipped with platforms lowered to 20 cm, so that slightly modified tram vehicles adapted for railway operations can travel to Stollberg. The railway line from Stollberg to St. Egidien was already leased from DB Netz in February 2002 by the Regio Infra Service Sachsen (RISS) from kilometers 1.375 to 19.461 and was also comprehensively modernized. While the electrified section of the route to Chemnitz has been used with the » Variobahn « low-floor articulated vehicle from the City-Bahn Chemnitz (CBC) since December 15, 2002 , the railway to St. Egidien is operated by the low-floor, diesel-powered Stadler Regio-Shuttle RS1 from the City Chemnitz train.

In 2006 the water station and the old locomotive shed, a double-track rectangular shed, were demolished, and on May 5, 2007, the CBC opened its new locomotive shed in place of the old locomotive shed with a public ceremony. Since then, the six CBC regio shuttles have been serviced here.

Kulturbahnhof

The station building of the Stollberg (Sachs) train station was renovated by the city of Stollberg and reopened on September 8, 2007 as a "cultural station". Since then, the building has been used as the domicile of various clubs, and there is also a café in the building.

outlook

Stage 5 of the Chemnitz model is intended to extend the existing Stollberg – Chemnitz Süd line to Niederwürschnitz by means of an approximately 3.5-kilometer electrified new line . With partial use of the former route from Zwönitz, the new line is to be led south out of the Stollberg (Sachs) station and then swiveled west after about 500 meters in the direction of the "Stollberger Tor" industrial park.

The commissioning of the new route section, which is initially planned for the end of 2019, can take place in 2022 at the earliest.

Railway infrastructure and service facilities

The railway infrastructure between Chemnitz-Zwönitzbrücke and Stollberg and the railway line to St. Egidien up to kilometer 1.375 as part of the Stollberg station have been leased from DB Netz AG by the City-Bahn Chemnitz (CBC) since 2002 . City-Bahn-Chemnitz has commissioned Regio Infra Service Sachsen (RISS) with the operational management of its infrastructure since the end of 2002, but formally offers the routes and service facilities itself. As a service facility, the CBC operates a double-track maintenance hall, three sidings with usable lengths of 50, 70 and 100 meters as well as platform 1 with a nominal height of 20 cm and a usable length of 74 m in the Stollberg (Sachs) station.

The DB Station & Service AG operates in the station Stollberg (Sachs) continue to partly covered central platform 2.3. This can be reached via an underpass from the southern end of the house platform. Both DB platform edges have an edge height of 55 cm above the upper edge of the rail and, according to DB information, a net construction length of 80 m each. However, part of platform 2 has been lowered to 20 cm. At the northern end of the central platform 2/3 there is a passenger crossing which, after clearing by the dispatcher, enables a barrier-free crossing of tracks 1 and 2.

Track 3 is used exclusively for regional traffic to and from St. Egidien, while track 1 is used exclusively for light rail operations to and from Chemnitz. Track 2, with its two stops at different platform heights, can be used for traffic in both directions.

Tracks 21 and 22 (platform tracks 1 and 2) and sidings 11 and 12 are electrified.

As part of the Chemnitz model , an electronic signal box was built in Stollberg station, which centrally covers the Stollberg – Chemnitz Zwönitzbrücke section and the entire Stollberg – St. Egidien without the St. Egidien station controls. The existing signal box was used for the control room. From the signal box at Stollberg (Sachs) station, RISS looks after the CBC route to Chemnitz as well as its own routes from Stollberg to St. Egidien and from Chemnitz Zwönitzbrücke to Chemnitz Süd.
