Planning regions in Saxony
In Saxony there were five planning regions when the law on spatial planning and regional planning of the Free State of Saxony (Landesplanungsgesetz) of June 24, 1992 came into force . As part of the administrative and functional reform , the previous planning associations for South West Saxony and Chemnitz-Erzgebirge were dissolved on August 1, 2008 and the South Saxony planning association was re-established, which has been called the "Chemnitz Region Planning Association" since March 25, 2010. A planning region is a regional planning area below the state level, which is made up of the areas of several rural districts and independent cities and for which a regional plan is drawn up. In the planning regions of West Saxony and Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia, brown coal plans (for open-cast mines) and general renovation plans (for closed open-cast mines) are also drawn up.
For each planning region there is a regional planning association of the same name as a corporation under public law . This is responsible for regional planning in the respective planning region.
The following planning regions exist in Saxony:
- Upper Elbe Valley / Eastern Ore Mountains , consisting of the districts of Meißen and Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains and the independent city of Dresden
- Leipzig-West Saxony , consisting of the districts of North Saxony , Leipzig and the independent city of Leipzig
- Chemnitz region , consisting of the districts of Central Saxony , Erzgebirgskreis , Vogtlandkreis and Zwickau as well as the independent city of Chemnitz
