About this picture

Schwepnitz ( Upper Sorbian Sepicy ) is a municipality in western Lusatia in the north of Saxony , about 12 kilometers northwest of the city of Kamenz and about 35 kilometers northeast of Dresden . It is located between Königsbrück and Bernsdorf on the Wasserstrich . To the west of Schwepnitz is the Königsbrücker Heide with the former Königsbrück military training area .

Community structure

The municipality of Schwepnitz consists of the following districts:

  • Bulleritz ( Bólericy ), 308 inhabitants
  • Cosel ( Kózły ), 159 inhabitants
  • Grüngräbchen ( Zelena Hrabowka ), 382 inhabitants
  • Schwepnitz ( Sepicy ), 1596 inhabitants
  • Zeisholz ( Ćisow ), 137 inhabitants

history

Bulleritz, mansion of the former manor

The place name is derived from the Old Sorbian Svepeťnica (from Old Sorbian: svepet "beehive") for a stream that flows through a forest with beehives and probably comes from the second settlement period by the Slavs . The first written evidence, however, comes from 1343.

The secluded heath village initially belonged to the Kamenz rule and from the middle of the 16th century to the royal rule of Königsbrück . Sorbian was spoken in Schwepnitz and preached in the church there until the 17th century, but by the end of the century the language had disappeared from everyday life there.

Since the founding of a glassworks by the Klahn family of glassmakers from Bernsdorf in 1865, the place has developed into an industrial community. With the monastery hut , a second glass factory was built in 1932. In World War II Schwepnitz suffered severe damage. The glass factories in the GDR were expropriated and in 1972 merged into VEB Sachsenglas Schwepnitz . From 1980 to 1990, this was where the "Superfest" drinking glasses for the catering industry were manufactured using a patented ion exchange process. Glass production in Schwepnitz ended in 2000.
