history

Towards the end of the 19th century, Catholic miners settled in Wolsdorf, which had been Protestant since the Reformation , so that at that time up to two thirds of the Wolsdorf population were Catholic. At first they belonged to the parish of St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt, from 1906 to the newly founded parish (curate) St. Bonifatius in Süpplingen . From 1908 Catholic religious instruction was given in the Wolsdorfer Schule, and from 1913 Catholic worship took place every two weeks in the Wolsdorfer inn Ladenthin.

The building site for the church was bought in August 1913 and construction began in March 1914. On August 2, 1914, the church was consecrated by dean Karl Grube from Braunschweig. The services were initially held by priests from Süpplingen and Helmstedt. On September 1, 1921, the Wolsdorf Curate was founded, and St. Joseph received its own clergyman. In addition to Wolsdorf, the curate also included Runstedt with Trendelbusch and Warberg . In 1927, a wooden barrack, which has since been demolished, was built as a meeting room. In 1929 a confessional was set up, before confession was made in the sacristy . In 1939 the used organ from the St. Bonifatius Church in Süpplingen could be installed in St. Joseph , as a new organ had been purchased in Süpplingen. Previously a harmonium was used in St. Joseph .

From 1946 onwards, the parish expanded due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons. In 1950 the church was renovated and a new, second-hand organ was installed. 1956 Wolsdorf was raised to an independent parish. From the 1950s to the 1970s, the number of community members fell due to the departure of young people and the demolition of the village of Runstedt. In 1975 the church got a new way of the cross , in 1976 a statue of St. Joseph by the Dutch artist Lou Manche was erected. In 1978 a used organ from the St. Bonifatius Church in Süpplingen was installed in St. Joseph. From 1981 the community life took a new upswing through the employment of a community officer . In 1983/84 the church was renovated again, combined with a redesign of the chancel. The church got a new altar , and the mosaic by Claus Kilian was attached to the back wall of the altar . In 1985 St. Joseph received a new organ again. The parish had about 400 members in the 1980s.

On March 1, 1998, the Helmstedt deanery, to which the church belonged, merged with the Wolfenbüttel deanery to form the new Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel deanery. In 2002 the church got the organ from St. Mary's Assumption in Königslutter. Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, which arose out of the dean's offices in Wolfsburg and the Helmstedt part of the dean's office in Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. Since September 1st, 2008 the church has belonged to the parish of St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt, at which time the number of parish members had dropped to below 300.

The single-nave church is almost 144 meters above sea level and has 120 seats, and its entrance is crowned by a simple cross . The windows show Saint Joseph, the patron saint of workers, and Saint Barbara , the patron saint of miners. A statue of St. Mary is next to the sanctuary, a statue of St. Joseph in the anteroom of the church. The back wall of the chancel is adorned with a crucifixion group executed as a mosaic by Claus Kilian . Below is the tabernacle set into the wall . The organ was built in 1972 by the Krell brothers from Duderstadt . Next to the church is a wooden tower with a bell .
