history

With the introduction of the Reformation in Königslutter in 1542 by Johannes Bugenhagen , the then three churches of Königslutter, the town church , the Clemenskirche of the village of Oberlutter, which was incorporated into Königslutter in 1924, and the imperial cathedral became Evangelical-Lutheran.

After Catholic workers from Silesia and Poland had settled in Königslutter, in 1914 the St. Bonifatius parish in Süpplingen built the branch church of St. Maria as the first post-Reformation church in Königslutter.

From 1945 the number of Catholics in Königslutter and the surrounding towns rose sharply due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons . In 1946, Königslutter became a vicarie belonging to the Süpplingen Curate and was given its own clergyman. Before that, priests from Süpplingen held the services in Königslutter. In 1949/50 a youth home was built behind the church, which was also used for events by other groups in the parish. On August 1, 1956, the Königslutter parish was raised to the status of an independent parish (Kuratiegemeinde) of St. Maria .

In 1959 a church building association was founded because the church had become too small for the congregation that had grown in the post-war period. There was also no rectory in Königslutter. On March 10, 1968 the foundation stone was laid for today's church, which was built on the same property as the previous church. The youth home had meanwhile been torn down for the new church. On 15 or 16 March 1969 which took place the consecration of the new church by Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen , then was Heinz-Georg Elbracht (1929-2017) pastor of the parish. The old church was demolished. In 1972 the church received an organ built by the Krell brothers from Duderstadt . In 1976 the parish was elevated to a parish, and its catchment area was enlarged. In 1978 the church got four bells , in 1980 the mosaic on the back wall of the altar.

From 1987 the pastor from Königslutter also looked after the parish in Süpplingen. On March 1, 1998, the Helmstedt deanery, to which the church belonged, merged with the Wolfenbüttel deanery to form the new Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel deanery. In the spring of 2002 a new organ was purchased; the previous instrument was taken to the St. Joseph Church in Wolsdorf. In 2003 the church got a new roof covering and a new heating system, around 2005 a statue of the Virgin Mary was erected in front of the church. Since November 1, 2006, the church has belonged to the then newly founded dean's office in Wolfsburg-Helmstedt, which arose out of the dean's offices in Wolfsburg and the Helmstedt part of the dean's office in Helmstedt-Wolfenbüttel. Since September 1, 2008, the church has belonged to the parish of St. Ludgeri in Helmstedt and no longer has a local clergyman. In 2008 there were around 1,800 Catholics in the church's catchment area. In 2015, a vestibule was created under the roof overhang on the entrance side by inserting windows.

Architecture and equipment

The church with its 19 meter high tower was built according to plans by the architect Wolfgang Tschirschwitz (Braunschweig), it is around 127 meters above sea level and has around 190 seats. The design of the interior and the stained glass windows was carried out by Claus Kilian , the stained glass windows were executed in 1969 by the glass painting company Oidtmann from Linnich . A confessional is set into the north wall of the church and the equipment includes an electronic Johannus organ. The mosaic on the back wall of the chancel was installed in 1980 and depicts Jesus Christ as the judge of the world , surrounded by the four evangelist symbols . This representation can also be seen on the apse of the imperial cathedral. On the back wall, small statues show Mary with the child and the apostles Paul of Tarsus and Simon Peter . The historic statue of the Virgin Mary comes from Bavaria and was a present from the bishop on the occasion of the consecration of the church in 1969. There are fossils embedded in the wall behind the statue of the Virgin Mary.
