New Year's Ahola

Sylvester Ahola , also Hooley , (born May 24, 1902 in Gloucester , Massachusetts , † February 13, 1995 ) was an American jazz trumpeter and cornet player .

Life

Ahola (whose family is of Finnish origin) started out as a drummer and switched to trumpet and cornet as a child. He played with the orchestra of Frank Ward , with whom he recorded in 1924 (not published), and from 1926 in that of Paul Specht , with whom he also played in England in 1926. He was then with Ed Kirkeby , The California Ramblers (with whom he made his first published recordings) and in the band of Adrian Rollini and Peter Van Steeden . In 1927 he went back to England, where he was very successful, recorded a lot and especially from the end of 1928 in the Bert Ambrose orchestraplayed. Because of difficulties with the British unions, he moved back to New York in 1931. He played again for Van Steeden and took on again with Ed Kirkeby in the early 1930s. After that he was in the NBC studio band until 1940 . He then moved to his hometown of Gloucester and was only active as a musician on a local level. In his final years he played again with the Cape Ann Symphony Orchestra.
