Michael Teti

Michael "Mike" Francis Teti (born September 20, 1956 in Upper Darby Township ) is a former rower and current rowing coach from the United States, who was 1987 world champion with the eighth .

Athletic career

The 1.88 m tall Michael Teti took part in the 1974 Junior World Championships with the eighth and finished tenth. In 1977 he took part in the two-man without a helmsman at the world championships in the adult class and together with Darrell Vreugdenhill reached sixth place. In 1978 he graduated from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. At the Pan American Games in 1979 he won a silver medal in the four without a helmsman . In 1982 he took over the position of rowing coach at Temple University . At the same time he continued his career as an active rower, in 1984 he was a substitute for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles .

At the 1985 World Championships , Teti won the bronze medal with the US eight. In 1986 he and John Strotbeck finished tenth in the two-man category without a helmsman. The two also won the silver medal at the Goodwill Games . In 1987 the US eight started at the World Championships in Nottingham with the line-up Michael Teti, Jon Smith , Ted Patton , Michael Still , Peter Nordell , Jeffrey McLaughlin , Douglas Burden , John Pescatore and helmsman Seth Bauer . The US eight won the final three seconds ahead of the boat from the GDR, behind which the Italians received bronze. The boat from the Federal Republic of Germany took sixth place. In the following year, the Germany eight won the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with almost two seconds ahead of the boat from the Soviet Union. In 1989 Teti left Temple University and became a rowing coach at Princeton University . In 1991 he returned to the US eighth as an active rower. He finished eighth at the 1991 World Championships and finished fourth at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . Then he finally ended his active career. From 1994 to 2005 he coached nine world championships, and in 2000 and 2004 he coached the US Olympic team. He stayed at Princeton University until 2008, and in 2009 he became head coach at the University of California, Berkeley .

Michael Teti is married to the rower Kay Worthington . His younger brother Paul Teti rowed three times at the Olympics.
