Pan American Games 1979

The 8th Pan American Games were played from July 1 to 15, 1979 in the Puerto Rican capital, San Juan .

3,700 athletes from 34 countries took part in the games. The central competition venue was the Estadio Hiram Bithorn .

Competitions in 22 sports were held during the Pan American Games. The most successful nation was the United States with a total of 266 medals.

The documentary A Step Away was made on the fringes of the Games .
