Pan American Games 1959

The III. Pan-American Games were played from August 27 to September 7, 1959 in the US city of Chicago . Originally Cleveland (Ohio) was planned as the host. A cut of the budget by five million US dollars by the US Congress forced the city to give up. At the instigation of Mayor Richard J. Daley , Chicago was awarded the contract.

2,263 athletes took part in the games. The central competition venue was Soldier Field . The swimming competitions were held in Portage Park .

Competitions in 18 sports were held during the Pan American Games. For the first time sailing was in the program. The most successful nation was the United States with a total of 236 medals.
