Handball

Both handball teams brought a medal. The men's gold medal was almost sensational. After the team was not able to qualify for the finals as group winners with sometimes tight results, the spectators experienced a dramatic game. The GDR team stood up to the apparently clear favorites USSR, at halftime it was a draw 10:10. Even after regular time it was a draw, with the Soviet team only equalizing 20 seconds before the end. In the following extra time, a brilliant parade by Wieland Schmidt decided the game and the GDR was Olympic champion.

With the women it was enough after the silver medal in Montreal in 1976 this time only for bronze, whereby they only missed the silver medal because of the worse goal difference against Yugoslavia.
