Career

Günther Schliwka, who comes from Samswegen , started lifting weights as a child. As a teenager he learned the trade of a car mechanic, but joined the National People's Army at the age of 17 and became a member of the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) .

In 1973 Günther Schliwka took part in the GDR youth championship of weightlifting in the athletic all-round competition, athletics was operated as a complementary sport to weightlifting, second place and in 1974 he was GDR youth champion in middleweight with 227.5 kg in a duel. With the same performance he reached the 4th place in the GDR championship of the seniors in 1974 in the lightweight and increased at the end of 1974 in the association cup tournament of the weightlifting association of the GDR to 240 kg in a duel.

In 1975 he was used at the Baltic Cup and achieved a lightweight 265 kg, with which he took 3rd place. At the Junior World Championships in 1975 in Marseille, he increased the lightweight to 275 kg (120-155) and came in 6th place. Already in 1976, meanwhile grown into the middleweight division, Günter Schliwka already exceeded the 300 kg mark in a duel. At the Grand Prix of Berlin he scored 302.5 kg and was third behind Wartan Militosjan , 337.5 kg a. V. Michailow, 325 kg, both from the Soviet Union. At the Oder Cup tournament in 1976 in Frankfurt (Oder) he achieved 305 kg and took 2nd place behind Smirnow, USSR, 320 kg.

At the world championship of the same year in Gettysburg / USA he increased himself to the excellent duel performance of 332.5 kg (145-187.5), but this performance was only enough for 4th place. Even in the individual disciplines of snatching and pushing, he remained in Gettysburg without a medal.

In 1979 he finished at the Championships of the Armies of the Warsaw Pact (SKDA Championship) in Lvov in the middleweight with 325 kg (140-185) behind the Bulgarian Tassimow, 330 kg, the 2nd place. At the World and European Championships he was not used. In 1980 Günther Schliwka managed to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in Moscow . There he managed 150 kg in the snatch, with which he was promising 4th place in this discipline. In pushing, however, he did not manage his initial weight of 187.5 kg three times, so that he had to retire without placing.

After this competition he stopped weightlifting as a competitive sport, in which he never succeeded in becoming GDR champion in a duel, although he was only 24 years old.

After 1990, as a sports director and trainer, he helped make SSV Samswegen one of the most powerful German weightlifting teams.
