Vartan Militosjan ( Armenian Վարդան Միլիտոսյան ; born June 13, 1950 in Leninakan ; † April 29, 2015 ) was a Soviet weightlifter of Armenian descent. He won the silver medal in middleweight at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and was European middleweight champion in 1976 and 1978 .

Career

Vartan Militosjan grew up in Leninakan and started lifting weights there as a teenager. He was a member of Spartak Leninakan . The 1.70 m tall athlete initially started in the lightweight and from 1973 in the middleweight division. With the extremely strong competition in the former Soviet Union, it was not until 1975 that he was able to draw attention to himself for the first time at international events.

In 1975 he won at the Soviet Middleweight Championships with 325 kg (140-185) with 3rd place behind Valentin Michailow , 327.5 kg and Valeri Smirnow , 325 kg, a medal for the first time. In the same year he then won a tournament of the Soviet weightlifting association in Zaporozhye in the middleweight division and increased to 330 kg (145-185) in a duel.

In 1976 he started for the first time in an international championship, the European championship in East Berlin . He got there in the middleweight division with 340 kg (150-190) the title in front of Meissen Peter Wenzel , who achieved 335 kg and Jordan Mitkow from Bulgaria , 330 kg. At the Olympic Games this year in Montreal , he could not quite repeat the performance shown in East Berlin. He reached only 330 kg (145-185) and had to admit defeat to Jordan Mitkow, who scored 335 kg (145-190). But he won the silver medal before Peter Wenzel, who came to 327.5 kg (145-192.5).

In 1977 Wartan Militosjan won a tournament in East Berlin with 345 kg (150-195). The performance in pushing of 195 kg and the duel performance of 345 kg were each new world records. He even repeated these performances again in 1977 at a tournament in Ryazan . Nevertheless, he was not used at the World and European Championships this year in Stuttgart . The 20-year-old Jurik Wardanjan , an Armenian who happened to also come from Leninakan, was preferred to him, who was world and European champion in Stuttgart with 345 kg in a duel.

From 1978 Jurik Wardanjan started in the light heavyweight division and made the way again for Wartan Militosjan in the middleweight division. This took advantage of this opportunity and this year was first in Havířov European champion in the middleweight division with 342.5 kg (147.5 to 195) before Zamari Todorov 330 kg from Bulgaria: At the World Cup in Gettysburg , however, he had to Roberto Urrutia of Cuba precedence let, who scored 347.5 kg. Militosjan achieved in Gettysburg 337.5 kg (147.5-190) kg and was thus runner-up world champion in front of Peter Wenzel, who achieved 335 kg.

In 1979 Vartan Militosjan got into a form crisis. At the Soviet championship that year he came with 332.5 kg (142.5-190) kg behind Valeri Smirnow, 335 kg, on the 2nd place, but was still used at the European Championships in Varna . There he achieved only 327.5 kg (142.5-185) and had to be content with 6th place. The winner was the Bulgarian Jordan Mitkow, who had regained strength after a longer break, 345 kg in front of his compatriot Nedchelko Kolew , 337.5 kg. At the world championship in 1979 in Saloniki he was no longer used.

Vartan Militosjan resigned at the end of 1979. In addition, he soon received a successor from his own family. His cousin Israil Militosjan , who was 18 years his junior and who also came from Leninakan, also became a weightlifter and achieved what Vartan Militosjan had failed to do, namely to become an Olympic champion . Israil Militosjan was the lightweight at the Olympic Games in Barcelona .
