Richard Nowakowski (born September 27, 1955 in Sztum , Poland ) is a former German boxer . He was a two-time Olympic medalist and a two-time European amateur champion.

Career

Richard Nowakowski played football in Ribnitz-Damgarten as a child and started boxing at the SG Aufbau when he was 11 , but soon switched to SC Traktor Schwerin . Trained by Paul Nickel and Fritz Sdunek , he soon achieved success. In 1969, 1971 and 1973 he was GDR youth and junior champion in the junior division and in 1982 Spartakiadeieger . He was a light boxer who fought as an adult with a height of 1.74 meters in feather or light weight (up to 57 kg or 60 kg body weight).

In 1974 he started at the European Junior Championships in Kiev in bantamweight, but lost the only fight he had to contest there in the quarter-finals against Felix Pak from the USSR and came in 5th place. In the same year he was for the first time GDR champion in the senior bantamweight division with a victory in the final over Jochen Rocke from TSC Berlin.

In 1975 he was defeated at the GDR featherweight championship in the final against Stefan Förster , SG Wismut Gera . He won two major international tournaments that year. First he won the "Giraldo-Cordova-Cardin" memorial in Las Villas in Cuba , a tournament in which the entire Cuban boxing elite competed, in the lightweight with a point victory in the final battle over Reinaldo Valiente from Cuba. He also won the TSC tournament in Berlin in the bantamweight division with a point win over Vladimir Sorokin from the USSR.

After Richard Nowakowski became East German champion for the second time in 1976 with a points win over his club colleague Christian Zornow, he was also nominated for the Olympic Games in Montreal . In Montreal he fought in featherweight and won there over Ruben Mares from the Philippines on points (5 :) over Behzad Ghaeli Bardeh from Iran and Gheorghe Ciochina from Romania by breaking off in the 3rd round and in the semifinals over Leszek Kosedowski from Poland after points (5: 0). In the final he was defeated by Ángel Herrera from Cuba, who dominated the world featherweight boxing scene at that time, by knockout in the 2nd round. Even so, the silver medal he won with it was well deserved. For this success he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

In 1977 Richard Nowakowski won his first international title. He became European featherweight champion in Halle (Saale) . He won over Tschatscho Andrejkowski from Bulgaria (3: 2), Viktor Rybakow from the Soviet Union (4: 1) and Roman Gotfryd from Poland (5: 0). There were three opponents who demanded everything from him, so it was all the more remarkable that he prevailed. How strong these opponents were was shown at the 1978 World Cup in Belgrade . There he met Tschatscho Andrejkowski in the first round, who this time defeated him with 4: 1 judges' votes on points. Richard Nowakowski was eliminated before the round of 16 and placed 17th with all the losers in his round.

In 1979, Richard Nowakowski also had an international championship on the program, the European championship in Cologne . After winning points over Mustapha Keddari from France (5: 0) and András Botos from Hungary (4: 1), he met Wiktor Demjanenko from the USSR in the semifinals , against whom he lost 5-0 judges' votes. He won an EM bronze medal with it .

In 1978 and 1979 Richard Nowakowski was featherweight with victories over Rudi Fink , ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) and Lutz Käsebier , SC Dynamo Berlin , GDR champion. In 1980 he did not take part in this championship in order to be able to prepare for the Olympic Games in Moscow undisturbed . In Moscow he won the Olympic boxing tournament over Christopher Ossai from Nigeria on points (5: 0), then won over Geoffrey Nyeko from Uganda by breaking off in the 3rd round (injury) and defeated George Gilbody from Great Britain safely on points (5: 0) . In the semifinals he was very unlucky, because he had to be taken out of the fight against Wiktor Demjananko due to an injury in the first round. But at least he won the bronze medal . He was the only boxer from the GDR to win a medal at two Olympic Games.

Richard Nowakowski's career did not end there. In 1981 he was once again GDR lightweight champion and defeated the future GDR starboxer Siegfried Mehnert from SC Chemie Halle , at that time still an up-and-coming talent, on points (4: 1) in the final battle . He then won the title for the second time at the European Championships in Tampere . He defeated Raul Trapero from Spain (5: 0), Todor Pawlow, Bulgaria (5: 0), Sorik Nurkasow , USSR (3: 2) and Krzysztof Kosedowski , Poland (4: 1) on points.

Richard Nowakowski also defeated Siegfried Mehnert in the final battle of the Chemistry Cup in 1982 in Halle (Saale) in the lightweight by points (5-0). At the world championship this year in Munich he started again in featherweight and won with points over Saber Sarag from Egypt (5: 0) and. Faksin Sümer, Turkey (5: 0) and a demolition win in the 2nd round over Miroslav Sandor, Czechoslovakia and a point defeat in the semifinals against Adolfo Horta from Cuba his sixth medal at an international championship and at the Olympic Games.

In 1983 Richard Nowakowski ended his boxer career in the GDR . In February 1989, after visiting relatives in the Federal Republic of Germany, he did not return to the GDR and joined the boxing club CSC Frankfurt (Main) , for which he fought several fights in the German Bundesliga and helped this club to win the German team championship in the 1989 season / 90 secure. From the 1990/91 season he boxed for a few years for the Bundesliga relay of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen . In 1989 he also won an individual title, because he became the German lightweight amateur champion with a point win in the final over Jörg Kästner from Ahlen . In 1990 Nowakowski took part in an international competition for the last time. At the World Cup in Dublin he lost to the Moroccan Kamal Marjouane (30: 9) in the preliminary round .

After German reunification, Richard Nowakowski returned to Schwerin in 1993 and founded a recycling company there. Nowakowski lives in Schwerin today.
