Stefan Förster (born October 17, 1950 in Chemnitz ) is a former German boxer , European amateur champion in 1973 and 1977 and eight-time GDR champion in featherweight and bantamweight.

Career

Stefan Förster, who had learned to be an electrician, started boxing at SC Karl-Marx-Stadt as a teenager in Karl-Marx-Stadt (formerly Chemnitz , now Chemnitz again). Only the result from his participation in the 1970 European Junior Championship in Miskolc / Hungary is known from his junior years . He started there in bantamweight and retired after a point victory over Andrzej Kedzierski, Poland (5: 9) in the quarterfinals with a point defeat against Dave Needham, England , and finished in 5th place.

In 1970, Stefan Förster also took part in the GDR senior championship for the first time and took 3rd place in the bantamweight division. In 1971 he was then GDR champion for the first time. In the final battle of the bantamweight he defeated Bernd Diecke from SC Dynamo Berlin on points. In the following years from 1972 to 1978 he won the GDR championship title in bantam or featherweight seven more times. Particularly noteworthy is his victory in 1975 over Richard Nowakowski from SC Traktor Schwerin .

In 1971 he also started for the first time at an international senior championship, the European Championship in Madrid . In bantamweight he won over Leslie Pickett from Wales on points, but was defeated in the round of 16 against Alexander Melnikow from the USSR and therefore ended up in 9th place. He fared not much better at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , where he again achieved 9th place. There he lost the bantamweight to Alfonso Zamora from Mexico , who later became WBA professional world champion .

In 1973 Stefan Förster made his breakthrough in the international ring. He became European featherweight champion in Belgrade with four wins . He defeated, among other things, the strong Romanian Gabriel Pometcu on points (3: 2) and in the final battle he beat Zoran Jovanović from Yugoslavia in the first round KO. At the 1974 World Cup in Havana , he was again in the round of 16. He lost to Boris Kuznetsov from the USSR on points and landed back on the 9th place. Stefan Förster was also eliminated in the round of 16 at the European Championships in Katowice in 1975 . Again he was defeated by a Soviet boxer, Ashot Avetisjan, on points (2: 3).

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Stefan Förster won over the strong Hungarian Jozsef Jakab on points (5: 0), lost in the quarter-finals to the 1975 European champion Viktor Rybakov from the USSR just on points (2: 3) and missed out on fifth place Place the medal ranks.

His second major success came in 1977. He was again European champion in Halle (Saale), this time in the bantamweight division. To win this title, he defeated four strong opponents from the former Eastern Bloc countries. First he won over Jozsef Jakab by breaking off in the 2nd round and then he defeated Fazlija Šaćirović from Yugoslavia (5-0), Dimitar Pehliwanow from Bulgaria (3-2) and Todor Dinu from Romania (4-1) on points.

In 1978 Stefan Förster succeeded in winning a medal at the World Championships in Belgrade . After winning two fights, he failed in the semi-finals against the Cuban Adolfo Horta , against whom he was defeated with 0: 5 judges' votes, but had already secured the World Cup bronze medal .

In 1980 Stefan Förster, who also fought over 30 international fights for the GDR , ended his active career as a boxer. In total, he played 245 fights, of which he won 198. He finished his studies in physical education with a diploma and then became a trainer at SC Wismut Gera , the club to which he moved from Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1974. In 1986 he returned to Karl-Marx-Stadt as a trainer. After the political change in Germany, he worked for a security company in Chemnitz and worked as a volunteer trainer at Box-Club 94 Chemnitz . In 2000 he worked for a short time as a trainer in the Sauerland boxing stable .
