Alfonso Zamora (born February 9, 1954 in Mexico City ) is a retired Mexican boxer .

amateur

Even as an amateur, Zamora was very powerful and won the silver medal in bantamweight at the Olympic Games in Munich at the age of 18. With a knockout win against Ricardo Fortaleza (Philippines), a point win against Stefan Förster (GDR), a knockout against the Spaniard Juan Francisco Rodríguez and the point win against Ricardo Carrera from the USA, he moved into the final, where he Had to admit defeat to the Cuban Orlando Martínez on points. In this final fight he was on the ground for the first time in his career. It was his only defeat, his record 49-1 (46 knockouts).

professional

In 1973 Zamora turned professional at the age of 19 and already won his first twenty fights all by knockout, before knocking South Korean Soo-Hwan Hong in the fourth round in the fight for the WBA world title on March 14, 1975 dethroned.

He successfully defended the title five times by knockout, including in South Korea against Hong and against Eusebio Pedroza (KO2), and also won three non-title fights early before it became the most widely recognized non-title fight in the lower weight classes on April 23, 1977 of professional boxing came, the so-called Battle of the Z Boys , in which he met his compatriot Carlos Zárate .

The also undefeated WBC title holder Zárate, now looked after by former coach Zamoras Arturo Hernández, had won 44 of 45 professional fights early. However, since the associations could not agree on a title union, the boxers simply made the fight perfect on their own. After Zamora had good scenes in the beginning, he had to go down three times in the fourth round, whereupon his father threw in the towel and the fight was broken off in Zárates' favor.

Zamora never recovered from this defeat, he lost the WBA title in the next fight against Jorge Lujan and never fought for a championship again. After three defeats in the next seven fights, he resigned from boxing in 1980 at the age of 26.
