Eusebio Pedroza (born March 2, 1956 in Panama City , † March 1, 2019 there ) was a Panamanian boxer.

Professional career

The tall southpaw Pedroza turned professional bantamweight in 1973 . He lost his tenth fight against the undefeated but also unknown Colombian Alfonso Perez by knockout. Due to several victories against opponents of the extended world class, he nevertheless got the chance on April 3, 1976 to fight the hard hitting Mexican Alfonso Zamora in Mexico for the world title of the WBA . But here he had no chance and was knocked out again, as in his next fight against the comparatively unknown Venezuelan Oscar Arnal. His ability to take must therefore be described as below average.

From 1977 he boxed in featherweight . On April 15, 1978 he succeeded in winning the WBA title against the Spaniard Cecilio Lastra. In 1979 he beat aging superstar Rubén Olivares . He was able to defeat the unbeaten Rocky Lockridge twice on points, and he managed to defend his titles against the later WBC title holder Juan LaPorte, Bernard Taylor, Royal Kobayashi and Jorge Lujan , among others . Pedroza never got one of the best in the class, for example Salvador Sánchez or Wilfredo Gómez at the time , in the prime of his skills, he convinced above all with consistency. In seven years, he managed 19 defenses, a record featherweight, before losing to Barry McGuigin from Northern Ireland on June 8, 1985. For the fight against McGuigan he cashed a record exchange in this weight class with 1 million dollars.

Pedroza is considered the third best Panamanian boxer of all time, but does not have a superstar status like Roberto Durán and Panama Al Brown . In 1999 he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .

Others

  • Pedroza is considered one of the most unfair boxers in boxing history and is mentioned in the same breath as Fritzie Zivic . But he did not lose a significant fight by disqualification, even if two points were deducted against LaPorte.
  • Former junior bantamweight title holder Rafael Pedroza is his cousin.
  • After retiring, he worked as a civil servant in Panama and also ran a pig farm.
