Alfonso Teofilo "Panama Al" Brown (* 5. July 1902 in Colón , † 11. April 1951 in New York City , New York , United States ) was a Panamanian boxer bantamweight. He was the first world champion from a Latin American country.
The black counter-boxer began his professional career in Panama in 1922, and later boxed in the USA and often in European cities such as Paris, where he was well known to intellectuals like Jean Cocteau . In 1929 he won the title according to the NYSAC version , was also recognized by the American NBA from 1930, and in Europe he boxed for the IBU title.
During his time as world champion, he lost a few times in fights that were not official title defenses. In 1934 he was stripped of the NBA world title because he refused to defend his title, but that year he defeated Victor Perez several times in battles for the IBU title. In a title fight (IBU version), however, he did not lose again until 1935 against the Spaniard Baltazar Sangchili and then temporarily ended his career. However, after two years he returned to the ring and beat Sangchili in a rematch in 1938. After defending his title, he resigned the title because he was no longer able to meet the bantam weight limit.
He continued to fight until 1942 and then resigned for good. In " Ring Magazine " he is the fifth best bantamweight of all time and the second best Panamanian boxer after Roberto Durán . In 1992, Brown was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
