Career

David Lee Armstrong is known only as Davey Armstrong in the boxing world. He began his boxer career as a teenager in 1966 at the Tacoma Boys Club , to which he remained loyal throughout his entire amateur career . The 1.75 m tall athlete boxed in the left display (= normal display).

In 1972 he first drew attention to himself as a 17-year-old when he took part in the "National Golden Gloves" in Minneapolis and was only defeated in the flyweight division in the quarterfinals against Melvin Johnson. At the subsequent AAU Championships (US championship) he started in the light flyweight division and won the USA championship title with a victory over Claudio Rivera. Then he won the US Olympic Trials in Ft. Worth in the light flyweight over Chris Flores, Claudio Rivera and Gary Griffin and thus secured the ticket to the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich . In the Olympic boxing tournament he won the light flyweight over Arif Dorgu from Turkey on points (4: 1), but lost in the round of 16 against Enrique Rodríguez , a Cuban naturalized in Spain , on points (0: 5) and came in 9th place .

In 1973 Davey Armstrong finished 2nd at the AAU Championships in bantamweight after losing points in the final to Mike Hess. In 1974 he won two international matches against Graham Moughton from England a . Kim Tai-ho from South Korea on points. Otherwise he did not appear in 1973 and 1974.

In 1975 he was then AAU featherweight champion with an impressive points victory over the strong Ronnie Shields and in the US elimination for the Pan American Games he even managed a featherweight victory over the reigning world champion Howard Davis . He was also in excellent form at the Pan American Games in Mexico City and secured the title with four wins. In the final, he beat the Cuban Genoveo Griman on points.

In 1976 Davey Armstrong dominated the American featherweight boxing scene. He first won the "National Golden Gloves" with a demolition win in the 2nd round in the final over David Toomer and then he won both the AAU Championships and the Olympic Trials over Leonel Valencia on points. At the 1976 Olympic Games, he defeated two strong European boxers, Anatoli Volkov from the USSR (5-0) and Tibor Badari from Hungary (5-0). In the quarterfinals he met the favorite Angel Herrera from Cuba . In this perfectly even battle, two judges decided with 59:58 points for Armstrong and two judges with 59:58 points for Herrera. The fifth judge gave a 59:59 with an auxiliary point in favor of Herrera, who was the point winner with 3: 2 judge votes. Only 5th place remained for Davey Armstrong. He was so disappointed with this performance that he gave up his boxing gloves after these Olympics. By then he had fought 150 fights, of which he had lost 19.

1978 Davey Armstrong made a successful comeback, because he won the "National Golden Gloves" in the lightweight final over Melvin Paul, but was defeated by this at the AAU Championships on points. Melvin Paul was then nominated for participation in the 1978 World Cup.

In 1979 he won again in the final battle of the AAU Championships. He beat Robert Hines on points. In 1979 he also started fighting against both German states. In Crystal Bay he won the lightweight over Richard Nowakowski , GDR , on points and in Concord he lost to Rene Weller from Germany on points. At the US elimination tournament for the Pan American Games, he won the final battle over Johnny Bumphus on points and represented the United States at these games in San Juan ( Puerto Rico ). In San Juan he was defeated in the quarter-finals against Adolfo Horta from Cuba on points (0: 5) and came in 5th place. In 1979 he also started at the World Cup in New York . He successfully took revenge on Rene Weller for the defeat in the international match with a point win, but lost in the final of this World Cup to Viktor Demjanenko from the USSR on points.

In 1980 Davey Armstrong started again against Angel Herrera in an international match against Cuba , but this time he was clearly defeated on points.
