Enrique Rodríguez Cal (born November 19, 1951 in Candás , Asturias ) is a former Spanish boxer . Rodríguez was a bronze medalist at the 1972 Olympic Games and the 1974 World Championships . He was also a participant in the 1976 Olympic Games and here also the flag bearer of his nation at the opening ceremony.

Career

amateur

Rodríguez won his first international light flyweight title (-48 kg) at the Mediterranean Games in Izmir in 1971 . The following year he took part in the Olympic Games in Munich and, after victories over Alexandru Turei, Romania (3: 2), David Lee Armstrong , USA (5: 0), and Rafael Carbonell, Cuba (4: 1), achieved the Semifinals. In this he faced the North Korean Kim U-Gil , to whom he was defeated with 3: 2 referee votes

In 1973 Rodríguez took part in the European Championships for the first time and also won the bronze medal here. He also finished third at the world championships the following year. He lost in the semifinals to the later Cuban world champion Jorge Hernández . At the European Championships in 1975 Rodríguez reached the final, which he lost to Olexander Tkachenko, Soviet Union (5-0). In the same year he won the Mediterranean Games for the second time in Algiers . In 1976 Rodríguez took part in the Olympic Games for the second time and was also honored to be able to take part in the opening ceremony as the flag bearer of his nation. In the competitions, however, he was eliminated in the first fight against the Mongols Serdambyn Batsüch . It was similar for him at the European Championships in 1977 , where he failed in the quarter-finals to Georgi Georgiev, Bulgaria (5-0).

In 1978 Rodríguez played his first professional fight. Of his first 19 fights, he won 18 and ended one in a draw. In 1979 he won the Spanish flyweight title, which he defended three times. Rodríguez fought his 20th fight in 1981 for the European title against the later WBC world champion Charlie Magri and lost it by TKO in the second round. He defended his Spanish championship again before he fought again against Magri for the European title in 1982 and lost again by TKO in the second round. Of the following five fights, Rodríguez did not win a single one. Among other things, he lost a European championship fight against Ciro De Leva.
