Frank Pfütze (born January 15, 1959 in Rostock , † January 20, 1991 in Berlin ) was a swimmer from the German Democratic Republic .

Career

At the 1974 European Championships in Vienna, Pfütze became European champion in the 1500 meter freestyle with a new European record time , and a year later he won the bronze medal in the 400 meter freestyle at the World Championships in Cali . That year he also improved the European record over 400 meters freestyle in Berlin .

In its day, the freestyle endurance races were very competitive, with up to five swimmers eligible for titles at World Championships or Olympic Games. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal he was fifth with the GDR's 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, and four years later he won the silver medal over this distance at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . In the same year he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze.

Frank Pfütze died of heart failure in 1991 . He left a wife and a three year old son.

It was assumed that the administration of performance-enhancing substances during his active time as a competitive athlete were the reason for Frank Pfütze's early death. The trigger for Frank Pfütze's heart failure is a blood clot that stopped his heart, which was too small for a competitive athlete.
