Gregorio Paltrinieri (born September 5, 1994 in Carpi , Province of Modena ) is an Italian freestyle swimmer, specializing in the 800 and especially the 1500 meter course, where he has won all titles at European and world level.

Career and Success

At the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona , Paltrinieri was third in the 1500 m (14: 45.37) behind the Chinese Sun Yang (14: 41.15) and Ryan Cochrane (14: 42.48). At the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha , he won the 1500 m title in 14: 16.10 minutes. ahead of the Tunisian Oussama Mellouli and the Canadian Ryan Cochrane .

At the 2014 European Championships , he won the titles over 1500 m in a European record time of 14: 39.93 min and over 800 m in 7: 44.98 min, both ahead of Faroe's Pál Joensen and his compatriot Gabriele Detti .

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012, the eighteen-year-old only had a 5th place in 14: 51.92 minutes in the 1500 m final. Here the Chinese Sun Yang won in a world record time of 14: 31.02.

When Sun Yang failed to compete in the 1500m freestyle final at the 2015 World Championships , Paltrinieri won his first World Championship gold. At the European Short Course Championships in Netanya in 2015 , he also won the title over this route and with 14: 08.06 min improved the longest men's world record set by Grant Hackett at over 14 years of age . At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he won the gold medal in the 1500 m freestyle in 14: 34.57 minutes.

Paltrinieri swam on August 14, 2020 in Rome in 14: 33.10 min European record over 1500 m freestyle.
