Emil Rausch (swimmer)

Emil Rausch (born September 11, 1882 in Berlin ; † December 14, 1954 there ) was a German swimmer .

Emil Rausch was Germany's first Olympic swimming champion. At the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis , he won gold medals in freestyle over 880 yards and over the mile. He also won the bronze medal over 220 yards, also in free style. In 1968 he was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .

At the national level, Emil Rausch was German champion in the 1500 m freestyle seven times in a row for his swimming club Poseidon Berlin from 1901 to 1907 . He also won the championship title in the 100 m freestyle at the German championships in 1903 and 1905 .
