Rainer Strohbach (born April 17, 1958 in Dresden ) is a former swimming athlete from the GDR .

Career

Rainer Strohbach from TSC Berlin won four championship titles at the GDR championships in 1975 . He won both freestyle relays as well as over 400 meters and over 1500 meters freestyle. At the swimming world championships in 1975 he finished fifth over 1500 meters and sixth over 400 meters freestyle. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , Strohbach was eliminated from the 200 meter and 400 meter freestyle run. With the four-by-200-meter freestyle relay, Strohbach swam to fifth place.

In 1977 Strohbach won his first international medal at the European Championships in Jönköping when the four-by-200-meter freestyle relay with Rainer Strohbach, Roger Pyttel , Detlev Grabs and Frank Pfütze took third place behind the relay from the USSR and the FRG . In the 400 meter freestyle, Strohbach took fourth place.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , the Soviet swimmer Vladimir Salnikov won the 1500 meter freestyle with a new world record and a 16-second lead, followed by his compatriot Alexander Tschajew , the Australian Max Metzker and Rainer Strohbach in fourth place within a second. The four-by-200-meter freestyle relay with Frank Pfütze, Jörg Woithe , Detlev Grabs and Rainer Strohbach as goalkeeper won the silver medal behind the Soviet relay and ahead of the Brazilians.

After his active time, Strohbach was a trainer at SC Dynamo Berlin , and after the reunification he worked as a salesman. Strohbach started as a Masters swimmer for SC Humboldt-Uni Berlin . Rainer Strohbach was married to Kirsten Wenzel , the marriage is divorced.
