Maxwell Raymond "Max" Metzker (born March 8, 1960 in Durban , South Africa ) is a former Australian swimmer , of South African origin, who won the bronze medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle at the 1980 Summer Olympics .

Career

Metzker made his first appearance at the Olympic Games at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , Canada , where he competed in the 400 and 1,500 meter freestyle. Over 400 meters he was eliminated in the seventh heat, but reached sixth place over 1,500 meters.

The 1978 Commonwealth Games were more successful , where he won the bronze medal over 400 meters and the gold medal over 1,500 meters. In addition, he won the gold medal in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay.

At the 1980 Summer Olympics he celebrated his greatest international success when he won the bronze medal in the 1,500 meter freestyle, where he was only 0.19 seconds slower than the runner-up Alexander Tschajew . He finished seventh in the 400 meter freestyle. He achieved the same result with the relay over 4 × 200 meters freestyle.

With his last success at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 , where he won the gold medal in the 1500 meter freestyle, Metzker ended his international career.
