The GDR swimming championships were held for the 27th time in 1976 and took place in Berlin from June 1st to 5th . The venue was the indoor swimming pool of the Hohenschönhausen Sports Forum , in which the champions were determined on 29 courses (15 men / 14 women). With nine titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team and Roger Pyttel from SC DHfK Leipzig , who won six titles, was the most successful athlete in this championship.

The championships saw a flood of world records . The women alone set fifteen new records, a record was only missed over the 200 m chest. Kornelia Ender was the first woman to stay below the two-minute limit in the 200 meter freestyle. Rosemarie Gabriel improved her record from the prelim again in the final over the 200 meter butterfly. As the starting swimmer of the 4 × 100 meter relay relay, Ulrike Richter set a new record over 100 meters back. With that she improved Kornelia Ender's record in the individual final. Roger Pyttel set new records for men. He also improved his world record from the preliminary run in the final over the 200 meter butterfly. He was the first man to stay below the two-minute limit. In the run-up to the 100 meter butterfly he set a new European record.
