Roger Pyttel (born May 8, 1957 in Wolfen ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .

In 1972 Pyttel took part in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , but failed there in the preliminaries over 100 meters freestyle, 100 meters butterfly, 200 meters butterfly and 4 × 200 meters freestyle.

His greatest successes were winning the European championship at the European Championships in 1974 in Vienna and in 1977 in Jönköping over the 100 meter butterfly . In 1975 he was also runner-up in the 100 meter and 200 meter butterfly world championship.

In 1976 he was able to swim a world record over 200 meters butterfly before the Olympic Games in Montreal , on June 3, 1976 in Berlin he was the first swimmer to stay below the 2-minute limit in 1.59.63 minutes. At the games themselves, however, he could not live up to his role as a favorite and won no medal, finishing fourth in the 100 meters and 200 meters butterfly. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow he won the silver medal over the 100 meter butterfly and the bronze medal over the 200 meter butterfly.

Since 2007 he has been working as a trainer for high-performance youngsters in the Fürstenwalder swimming club .
