Rafał Szukała
Rafał Marek Szukała (born April 9, 1971 in Poznan ) is a former Polish swimmer who won an Olympic silver medal in 1992 and was world champion in butterfly swimming in 1994 .
Athletic career
Szukała took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . Over 100 meters butterfly he took 13th place, over 200 meters he reached 17th place. At the European Swimming Championships in 1989 he won over 100 meters with three hundredths of a second ahead of French Bruno Gutzeit , over 200 meters he received the silver medal with almost two seconds behind Hungarian Tamás Darnyi . Two years later, Szukała missed a medal over 100 meters at the European Swimming Championships in 1991 , over 200 meters he won the silver medal as in 1989, this time behind the Frenchman Franck Esposito .
In 1992 at the Olympic Games in Barcelona the final of the 100 meter butterfly took place on July 27th. The American Pablo Morales won in 53.32 seconds ahead of Rafał Szukała in 53.35 seconds. Three days later, US swimmer Melvin Stewart won over 200 meters ahead of New Zealander Danyon Loader . Franck Esposito won the bronze medal in 1: 58.51 minutes, and Szukała took fourth place in 1: 58.89 minutes.
In 1993 Szukała won the title over 100 meters at the European Championships before the Russian Denis Pankratow and the Croat Miloš Milošević . The end of 1993 saw the first short course world championships , with the Croatian Miloš Milošević winning over 100 meters butterfly ahead of the Americans Mark Henderson and Rafał Szukała. At the beginning of September 1994, the world championships were held in Rome in the normal 50-meter pool. Szukała won the 100 meter title in 53.51 seconds ahead of Swedes Lars Frölander and Denis Pankratow.
In 1995 Pankratow won the 100-meter course at the European Championships in Vienna in front of the Ukrainian Denys Sylantyev and Rafał Szukała. At the end of his career, Szukała reached fifth place over 100 meters at the 1996 Olympic Games . The Polish layer relay took seventh place.
