Milorad Čavić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милорад Чавић , born May 31, 1984 in Anaheim , California ) is a Serbian swimmer .

Career

Milorad Čavić first started at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney for his country, where he competed in the 50 m freestyle. At the European Short Course Championships in Dublin in 2003 , he set a new butterfly world record with 50.02 s . This was set on March 24, 2004 by Ian Crocker . Furthermore, Čavić is a five-time European champion.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 he won the silver medal in the 100 m butterfly, where he was only beaten by a hundredth of a second by Michael Phelps .

scandal

At the award ceremony for his success in the 50 meter butterfly at the European Swimming Championships in 2008 , Čavić wore a T-shirt that read "Косово је Србија" ("Kosovo is Serbia"). This earned him the disqualification for the remaining competitions, because the Disciplinary Committee of the European Swimming League (LEN) judged this to be a violation of the statute. As a consequence, Čavić had to pay a fine of $ 10,800, but was allowed to keep his medal and the European record.
