Ian Lowell Crocker (born August 31, 1982 in Portland , Maine ) is a retired American swimmer.
Career
Crocker is a specialist in the short butterfly distances and appeared in the top world for the first time at the 2001 World Swimming Championships when he won the silver medal in the 100 m butterfly. He had previously won a gold medal in the 4 × 100 m relay at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , but silver was his breakthrough in an individual competition. In 2003 he became world record holder and world champion in the 100 m butterfly and won silver in the 50 m butterfly.
At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he was the big favorite over 100 m dolphin, but had to admit defeat to the new star Michael Phelps and won the silver medal. He took home a gold medal from Athens with the 4 × 100 m layer relay. He won the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.
In Montréal at the swimming world championships in 2005 he had to admit defeat to the South African Roland Mark Schoeman , who had already taken his world record from him in the semifinals and then improved it again to 22.96 s in the final on the non-Olympic 50 m butterfly distance . For this, Crocker won the 100 m butterfly in a new world record time and was also world champion with the American 4 × 100 m medley relay.
In 2008 Crocker qualified behind Michael Phelps at the 2008 Olympic Games over 100 m butterfly for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he finished fourth and finally announced the end of his career.
