Roland Mark Schoeman (born July 3, 1980 in Pretoria ) is a South African swimmer .

Life

He started swimming in earnest at the age of 16. After only a few months he was playing his first competitions and his sporting career rose sharply. At the Commonwealth Games he won a gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal.

At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens he won gold in the South African 4 × 100 m freestyle relay in a world record time, silver in the 100 m freestyle and bronze in the 50 m freestyle. At the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montreal , he twice improved the world record over 50 m butterfly and became world champion. Schoeman also became world champion in the 50 m freestyle. He is the first person to swim the 50 meters in under 21 seconds.

In May 2019 Schoemann tested positive for the unapproved hormone GW501516 and banned for one year due to doping .
