César Augusto Cielo Filho (born January 10, 1987 in Santa Bárbara d'Oeste ) is a Brazilian freestyle and butterfly swimmer who specializes in short distances . In 2008 he won gold and bronze at the Olympic Games in Beijing and six world championship titles in the following years.

Career

César Cielo began his swimming career at Esporte Clube Barbarense in his hometown. In 2003 he moved to São Paulo , where he played for EC Pinheiros, founded in 1899 as SC Germânia . Since 2004 he has also been part of the Brazilian national swimming team. At the 2004 Short Course World Championship in Indianapolis , he won silver with the 4x100m freestyle relay and was fourth in the 4x100m individual relay relay and sixth in the 100m freestyle.

Since 2006 he has lived in Auburn , in the US state of Alabama and studied economics at Auburn University , for whose swimming team, the Tigers, he also started, although he also remained connected to EC Pinheiros. He has since graduated in International Business . In the same year he appeared again in the short course World Cup in Shanghai . He started three times - with the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays as well as over 100m freestyle - and came in fifth three times. In the same year Cielo Filho started at the Pan Pacific Games in Victoria . The best result there was sixth place in the 50 m freestyle. Over 100 m and with the two 4x100m relays he was seventh.

2007 brought César Cielo Filho to Melbourne for the first time at a long-course World Cup. Over 50 m butterfly and the 4x100m individual relay he was eliminated in the heats, with the 4x100m relay he took eighth and last place in the final. Things went better for the Brazilian in the 50 m freestyle, where he finished sixth, and the 100 m freestyle, where he just missed a medal in fourth. Cielo Filho won gold three times at the Pan America Games in 2007: over 50 m and 100 m freestyle as well as with the 4x100 m freestyle relay.

At the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Cielo Filho started on three courses. First he was eliminated with the 4x100m freestyle relay in the preliminary run. Over 100 m freestyle he reached the final and was able to win the bronze medal in a thrilling finish together with Jason Lezak at the same time . The Brazilian was able to surpass this success two days later on the 50m freestyle course when he won in 21.30 seconds and set a new Olympic record. Over this and twice the distance, he has also held the South American records since the Games in Beijing, over 100 m also on the short course.

Cielo Filho has won the National Collegiate Athletic Association title six times . In 2007 he was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year. In 2010 he joined the CR Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro , although he continues to train primarily in Auburn.

In March 2011 he and 3 other compatriots tested positive for furosemide . The Brazilian association CBDA only issued a warning, but not banned him. In July 2011, the CAS International Court of Justice decided that Cielo Filho was allowed to compete in the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai that same month . There he won the titles over 50 meters freestyle (21.52 s) and 50 meters butterfly (23.10 s). At the Summer Olympics in London a year later he was unable to defend his Olympic victory in the 50-meter freestyle and was third behind gold medalist Florent Manaudou from France and the American Cullen Jones . He finished sixth over the 100-meter freestyle.
