Santa Bárbara d'Oeste (Portuguese for: Saint Barbara of the West ) is a city in Brazil. It belongs to the metropolitan area of Campinas in the state of São Paulo , about 130 km from its capital São Paulo . According to official estimates, 193,475 people lived here in 2019.
history
In the years around 1860 the city decided that the allied refugees from the Civil War ( Confederados ) could stay in the region. Among these was the Alabama Senator named William Hutchinson Norris. Since that time there has been a picnic of all allies with food and songs from the time every year on the second Sunday in April.
economy
The city is considered the cradle of the Brazilian automotive industry, as the Isetta, the first automobile to be produced in Brazil (under license), rolled off the assembly line here . The manufacturer was the Indústrias Romi company , which is still based in the city to this day. Today Romi produces and sells machine tools and plastic injection molding machines , vehicle production no longer exists. The German machine tool manufacturer Burkhardt + Weber also belongs to the Indústrias Romi group .
Urban politics
In the 2012 election in Brazil , Denis Eduardo Andia of the Green Party was elected city prefect. In the 2016 elections in Brazil , he was re-elected for the 2017-2020 term.
The legislature lies with a city council ( Portuguese: Câmara Municipal ) made up of 19 elected representatives.
