Americana is a city in the interior of the Brazilian state of São Paulo with 237,112 inhabitants (2018). The city is located at 47 ° 19 'West and 22 ° 44' South, in the metropolitan area of Campinas at a distance of 40 kilometers from Campinas and 140 kilometers from the city of São Paulo . The municipality covers an area of 134 km².
Americana got its name from American Civil War refugees who settled in the region in 1866. One of them was William Norris , Senator from Alabama . After the town was connected to the rail network in 1875 and a cotton processing factory was built, the region experienced an upswing.
Around 1904 the settlement was named Vila dos Americanos and in 1924 it received city rights.
Today Americana is a city that lives mainly from light industry and from the processing of agricultural production in the area.
The Pedagogical-Historical Museum Dr. João da Silva Carrão , which deals with slavery and cotton production, as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art are interesting.
