Nova Odessa is a municipality ( município ) with about 60,000 inhabitants in the Brazilian state of São Paulo and is located in the metropolitan region of Campinas a good 100 km north of the city of São Paulo .
history
The place was founded on May 24, 1905 on the newly acquired farm Fazenda Pombal from the state of São Paulo and opened up in 1907 by the railway company Companhia Paulista de Estradas de Ferro . The chosen name of the city served the purpose of settling first Ukrainian and later Latvian immigrants. Originally part of Campinas, Nova Odessa became part of the western municipality of Americana in 1924 and has been independent since January 1, 1960.
geography
The community is located between Americana and Campinas on the eastern edge of the Atibaia dam, which merges directly into the Rio Piracicaba through the confluence with the Jaguari . In the slightly undulating area there is a tropical mountain climate with a dry winter and a predominant southeast wind.
Economy and Transport
The region around Campinas generates 9% of the Brazilian gross national product with a little more than 3% of the population of the country . The per capita income is one of the highest in Latin America (US $ 10,000 / year). The Rodovia Annexüera (SP-330), which connects São Paulo with Uberlândia in Minas Gerais , located almost 500 km to the north, runs through the village .
The Instituto Plantarum , which belongs to the Botanic Gardens Conservation International , has existed here since 1981 .
