It represents the principles of pacifism , federalism , parliamentarism and direct democracy . At the international level, it is a member of the Global Greens .

According to its self-image, the party cannot be classified according to the right-left scheme, and it forms alliances with various partners. At the federal level, the party officially supported the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from 2003 to 2005 . It is true that this support was terminated due to disagreements about environmental policy; Most recently, culture minister and musician Gilberto Gil was a member of the party in the government, but announced his resignation in July 2008.
