Burkhardt + Weber is a Reutlingen-based manufacturer of machine tools and belongs to the Brazilian Indústrias Romi group. Burkhardt + Weber is a German pioneer in the manufacture of machine tools with numerical control .

history

The company was founded in 1888 by Louis Burkhardt and Johannes Weber and its product range was initially limited to shotguns, sewing machines and simple drills, and later circular saws in custom-made and multi-way special machines. After around 70% of the buildings on the factory premises had been destroyed by the Second World War and the occupation had banned the manufacture of machines, production had to be rebuilt. In the 1950s, Burkhardt + Weber was one of the most innovative machine tool manufacturers in Germany, for example Europe's first transfer line was built as early as 1951 . In such a transfer line, a sequence of production points is linked to one another, which enables an automatic production process. In 1959, the world's first machining center was presented that had an NC control using punched tape. From 1993, Burkhardt + Weber machining centers were delivered with digital control technology.

As early as 1982, the company belonged to the Swiss Georg Fischer group. In the 1990s he sold Burkhardt + Weber to financial investors, among whom the company ran into financial difficulties and had to file for bankruptcy in 2001. One way out of the bankruptcy was an investment by Riello Srl from Verona , which Burkhardt + Weber took over in the same year. Romi Europa GmbH, based in Groß-Gerau , a subsidiary of the Brazilian Indústrias Romi SA, has been the sole shareholder of Burkhardt + Weber since February 2012 .

The machining centers from Burkhardt + Weber are mainly marketed for use in the manufacture of parts for industries with particularly high demands on processing precision, such as vehicle construction, printing and machine tool construction and the aerospace industry.

Trivia

Two bee colonies have been maintained on the Burkhardt + Weber premises in Reutlingen since 2017. Some of the harvested honey is given to customers and employees. The queens were baptized Louisa I and Johanna I based on the names of the company's founders.
